Batch 1 (June 2010): 7-months in Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels
2012 Release - Aged 11 months in Blanton’s Barrels.

As dark as the legend of Blackbeerd himself, behold the Imperial Stout. Sweet malts battle roasted grain on the decks of yer tongue. Like a blast from a cannon, hop are followed by smoked malt.

A: The pour is essentially black in color with a thin layer of dark khaki head. S: Whiskey and vanilla come through but the intense roastiness of the base beer is also really quite apparent. There is a bit of dark chocolate and coffee on the aroma as well. A touch of molasses and char. T: Pretty much the same story on the palate. Whiskey flavor and vanilla with charred oak. Lots of roasted malts with some molasses and toffee sweetness as well as dark chocolate notes. M: The body is certainly a bit thin on this beer, but the carbonation and mouthfeel are solid. O: The barrel aging helps to take away some of the intense roast character, but it’s not an amazing beer.

Draft at Brewvival. Completely black, thick brown head. Aroma of vanilla, burnt espresso, chocolate. Taste is very roasty with brandy and vanilla, but not boozy at all. Very nice stuff.

Growler… This beer rocks!… Pours pitch black with a small, creamy, beige head. Decent retention. The aroma offers dark mocha, vanilla, bourbon, coconut and a trace of toasted oak. Full-bodied and silky with solid carbonation. The flavor is of black malt, warming bourbon, sweet dark chocolate, singed caramel and a whisper of pouch tobacco. Lengthy, burnt, mildly boozy finish – hop, black malt and ethanol bitterness hangs out a good while after each sip. World class treatment of a really good, but not great beer. Growler courtesy of Elliesbrown. Thanks Zack!

651mL at RBSG in Philly 2011. The infamous BeerAdvocate White Wale it Forward p2 (WWII) catastrophe beer. The pour is a clear deep ruby looking like cola. A small tan head leaves spotty lace. Nose is red fruity and apple heavy thankfully moving to meat and fat with spicy bourbon. Taste is buttery bourbon and soft with lots of hot and warming alcohol, tannic oak. Ends ashy and bitter with spicy bourbon and black peppercorn. Pretty nice overall.

Bomber, dated 6/15/10. Poured near-black with not a whole lot going on for head.. just a thin dusting of beige and a looser-bubbled ring. The aroma picked up a lovely blend of dark chocolates, vanilla, and roasty black patent with complementary sweet bourbon, vanilla, and peppered oak from the barrel.. really excellent nose! The flavor held serve.. more roasted black patent at the core, with enough dark chocolate and vanilla to keep it interesting.. sweet, tangy, tasty bourbon and related barrel character laced throughout.. peppery and bourbon-ny on the long, warm, well-balanced finish. Heavier-bodied and dry on the palate with low carbonation.. roast and warmth stuck around for a while after the finish.. really good flow. This was excellent, and surprisingly so because I didn’t like the Jack D version nearly as much.
