COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
**NOTE** This entry is for the bourbon barrel aged version only. The Jack Daniels whiskey barrel aged version is under separate entry in the database.

Batch 1 (June 2010): 7-months in Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels
2012 Release - Aged 11 months in Blanton’s Barrels.

As dark as the legend of Blackbeerd himself, behold the Imperial Stout. Sweet malts battle roasted grain on the decks of yer tongue. Like a blast from a cannon, hop are followed by smoked malt.

This was picked up directly from COAST and consumed the next day. Served from bottle into a COAST imperial pint. Pours black with a one finger light tan head. Maintains excellent lacing throughout. The aroma was comprised of malt, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and bourbon. The flavor was of malt, cream, vanilla, bourbon, and dark chocolate. It was heavy on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this is an outstanding brew. It is in the Top 3 of the best stouts I have sampled. It is not lacking in any aspect with overall pleasantness nor complexity. It was completely worth the 4 hour drive home to get my hands on this brew. If you are a stout/barrel aged fan, you owe it to yourself to get your hands on this one.

this one was a very good ba version of a nice original imo. its not over barreleled in any way, but only spiced with it. the awesome smokey peaty aromas and tastes are still there, with a light spirited dusting. great stuff.

Bottle from The Charleston Beer Exchange on 10/22/2010. Bottled on 06/15/2010. Clear dark black body with a small creamy tan head. Sweet bourbon, vanilla and chocolate aroma. Sweet vanilla and chocolate flavor. Very smooth mouthfeel with medium full body with moderately low carbonation.

Bottle straight from the brewery, shared by NachlamSie. Pours ultra black with very small tan head. The aroma is molasses, vanilla, almond, some dark fruit notes, a smoky hint, lots of fresh cocoa, and a bit of roastiness. The flavor is light coffee, lots of cocoa, prune, and a lovely oaken tone. There is a fairly strong smokiness in the finish, from the barrel char I presume. It also finishes with slight alcohol and sweet chocolate. There is a very mellow piney bitterness throughout to keep the sweet elements in check. There are a lot of strong flavors in this, but they are in an impressive balance. This is a delicious beer, indeed.

Big thanks to G311 for this one. Pours inky black with a light tan head and little lacing. Smell is very nice with the bourbon really coming through alongside a fair amount of chocolate and malt. The barrel dominates the falvor as well. A bit of oak and plenty of chocolate. Mouthfeel is quite nice and has that typical barrel-aged mouthfeel that is a bit difficult to ever describe. Drinkability is quite high as well. I will hand it to COAST on this one, as this is much, much better than the regular version of Blackbeerd. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 09-17-2010

Bottle compared side by side with the Jack Daniels version. This one still had a good bit of bourbon in the aroma and flavor. Super dark with a lot of body and flavor. Carbonation was pretty stellar for this style. Definitely held up well over time.

Brewvival 2013. Awesome treatment. Black pour with a big mocha head. Big and beautiful nose full of sweet bourbon, rich dark malt, cocoa and some vanilla. Flavors were big and boozy with notes of cocoa and plenty of dark malt. The Blanton’s really shined here. Excellent.

2012, black waxed, Blanton’s barrels. on draft at Brewvival but rated from the bottle purchased at the release. pours a rich, dense black that sits oily in the glass capped by a razor thin, dark khaki, head. aroma is excellent with rich chocolate brownies, gingersnap cookies, dark roasted malts, and toasted coconut backed by smoked wood, ash, dark fruits, and just a hint of bourbon. flavor is wonderful as well with more barrel notes of vanilla, coconut, toasted wood, and spiced bourbon coming forward ahead of chocolate malts, graham crackers, maple, and coffee with dense, smokey roast on the back end. palate is rich and full bodied with minimal carbonation and a lingering, dry finish of spirits and cocoa. overall, probably the best version of BA Blackbeerd to date. well done.
