3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 roborb (66) - Raleigh, USA - NOV 8, 2009
22 oz bottle poured into a snifter produced a dark black beer with a short lived 1 1/2 finger head. The smell was pretty good and consisted of whiskey, malts and smoke. The flavor was a bit of a let-down for my preference towards Imperial Stouts. Despite the wonderful whiskey aroma I could hardly detect the whiskey. There was an overwhelming chocolate presence and a very dry finish. For me the body was too light and the carbonation a little too strong. Would like to try again to see if it was a bad bottle.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 KickInChalice (772) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 6, 2012
From notes. First reviewed 7/15/2011. Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a tulip. Part of a 09, 10, Buffalo Trace, Jack Daniels side by side. From notes.
This pours nearly black with slightly transparent brown edges.
The aroma is more balanced and complex than the regular version. Whiskey, oak, vanilla, and brown sugar come across the nose first, followed by the dark roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and smokey aromas.
This version is quite sweet to start. Sweet bourbon, vanilla, and brown sugar combine with the roasted malt to impart a sugary coffee flavor. The oak and smoke flavors swirl together to add nice complexity in the middle. There is much less hop bitterness here, which is a plus. Unfortunately, the sweetness seems to spiral out of control and become a bit cloying by the end of the sip.
For the style, this has a medium body and medium carbonation. A light stickiness and coffee-like acidity, atlhough even the mouthfeel mellows a bit from the barrel.
The aroma was interesting and complex and the flavor was good, but the sweetness just becomes a bit too much by the end. My tasting-size glass was enough.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 dimenhetfield (1731) - , Florida, USA - OCT 16, 2011
Bottle compared side by side with the Buffalo Trace version. Provided by GOGRANDE. Thanks a ton my friend. This beer probably reached its peak about 6 months ago. The carbonation well pretty much gone and sadly so was the flavor. There was still slight hints of bourbon and chocolate but it really lacked in comparison to the Buffalo Trace Version.

Brown black pour with tan head and lace. Huge chocolate, vanilla, and BB aroma. Chocolate, vanilla, burnt coffee, nice warmth, and a nice malt bitter. Medium full bodied with good carbonation.

The beer pours to a pitch black body with a thin light tan head. The aroma is sweet vanilla chocolate brownies. Subtle coffee and lots of sweet barley and oats. Very nicely balanced on everything. The flavor is sweet oats and barley with chocolate malt and oaky vanilla bourbon. Some light black licorice. The palate is dry and lightly astringent.

Bomber. Poured deep black with a lovely initial yellowy-beige head. The aroma picked up honey, molasses, and black patent roast with just mild oak and bourbon accenting.. a little bit buttery.. some vanilla right on the back.. smooth, but not all that exciting. The flavor found lots of roasty black patent, some licorice, rolled oats, and molasses at the core.. again not a whole lot of action from the Jack barrel, but it was complementary.. light peppery warmth on the finish. Medium-plus bodied and very smooth through the palate.. balance was very good. This wasn’t bad by any means, but it was a bit underwhelming.
4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Drake (5232) - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA - AUG 6, 2011
22 ounce bottle shared by Nate at the 14th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering, 3/19/11. I don’t care what anyone from Georgia or anyone else says, Jack ain’t bourbon. Pours a dark brown color with a medium sized tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of whisky, vanilla, caramel, roasted malts, nutty notes. The taste is roasted malts, nutty notes, wood, vanilla, vegetal notes, leafy and peppery hops notes, and a bit of raisin. Full bodied.

Draft at brewer. Jet black ink pour. Scent is coffee, wood and boubon. Taste is roasty and bittersweet, very balanced and creamy. Boubon warming effect.

UPDATED: MAY 27, 2011 Bottle. 200th imperial stout rating. Pours oily black. Tan head. Nose is roasted chocolate, mocha java, dark chocolate, vanilla and whiskey barrel. Taste is the same. Body is on the lighter side for an imperial, but the spot on taste and nose is really the driving force of this masterful brew.
4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 oobawa (588) - South Carolina, USA - MAY 17, 2011
Pours pitch-black and super-thick, like a motor-oil milkshake. The smell shows unmistakable bourbon and oak, yet also keeps the mocha soul of the original intact. Bittersweet and boozy yet smooth and mellow, rolling layers of flavor keep sweeping across your tongue. The finish drips with Sour Mash Whisky, but only the smoothest, top-shelf bottle you can find. Remarkable brew. (3/2/09)

Had at the great Chicago tasting along with the regular Blackbeerd and the Buffalo Trace. I had both the Blackbeerd and Buffalo Trace before so this finished off the trio. I was not overly impressed with the first two, this one was slightly better but not saying a ton as I think in general these stours are just all slightly above average...The taste was much sweeter and smooth, lots of vanilla and bourbon and the taste and feel is the definition of what a buttery stout tastes like.
If you can find this its worth drinking, but don’t over pay.
