It has a good roasted malt base but it also has an overbearing sweetness that lingers.

Brewvival 2013. Awesome treatment. Black pour with a big mocha head. Big and beautiful nose full of sweet bourbon, rich dark malt, cocoa and some vanilla. Flavors were big and boozy with notes of cocoa and plenty of dark malt. The Blanton’s really shined here. Excellent.

Draft at Brewvival. Completely black, thick brown head. Aroma of vanilla, burnt espresso, chocolate. Taste is very roasty with brandy and vanilla, but not boozy at all. Very nice stuff.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 mcberko (4046) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - NOV 21, 2012
UPDATED: NOV 22, 2012 2010 vintage. 22 oz. bottle, sent from CooperEllis (thanks a lot, John), pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of the buffalo trace barrels upfront, tar and charcoal. Flavour brings out the barrels upfront without overburdening the palate, with some smoked malt, charcoal and almost a sour tang to it, likely from the barrels - not much actual bourbon, just the presence of some sort of barrel aging. A slight improvement from the original, as to increase the complexity. But still sub-par for the style.
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 Treebs (733) - , Illinois, USA - OCT 20, 2012
Bottle shared by me at the Star Wars tasting. Served side by side with the ’10 Blackbeerd. 22 oz waxed bottle served in a Deschutes snifter. Bottled 6/15/10.
A: Pours a dark, opaque black. A thin and bubbly dark mocha head forms on the pour and quickly dissipates to a thin ring. Some light splotches of lace are left behind.
S: Light bourbon upfront melds nicely with light smokiness and roasted malts. There is a sweet, almost Tootsie roll like, chocolate flavor in the periphery that plays nicely with the smoke.
T: The bourbon is upfront just like nose. There is a more dark fruit presence with a touch of smoke. Roasted marshmellow, sweet chocolate, and toasted malts with the slightest hint of oak.
M: Medium bodied, a touch thin from the barrel aging. Very smooth and creamy with a little smoke on the finish. The carbonation level is medium to low.
O: This has held up remarkably well and is drinking pretty well right now. I can’t see it getting any better though and would drink it now.

Bottled shared by Lunch at my tasting on August 7, 2010. Thanks Paul!
A: This version of Blackbeerd appears a near black shade and has a decent sized head that leaves a fair amount of lacing on the glass.
S: Alcohol and rich, roasted malt.
T: This was definitely an improvement over the regular Blackbeerd. The beer still tastes a little too hot, but has a bolder, richer flavor than the original, making the heat more forgivable.
M: Surprisingly smooth. Warming alcohol in the finish.
D: A tasty beer. I’d be happy to drink it again.
