COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Batch 1 (June 2010): 7-months in Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels
2012 Release - Aged 11 months in Blantonís Barrels.

As dark as the legend of Blackbeerd himself, behold the Imperial Stout. Sweet malts battle roasted grain on the decks of yer tongue. Like a blast from a cannon, hop are followed by smoked malt.

UPDATED: NOV 22, 2012 2010 vintage. 22 oz. bottle, sent from CooperEllis (thanks a lot, John), pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of the buffalo trace barrels upfront, tar and charcoal. Flavour brings out the barrels upfront without overburdening the palate, with some smoked malt, charcoal and almost a sour tang to it, likely from the barrels - not much actual bourbon, just the presence of some sort of barrel aging. A slight improvement from the original, as to increase the complexity. But still sub-par for the style.

UPDATED: SEP 29, 2013 Bottle shared by me at the Star Wars tasting. Served side by side with the í10 Blackbeerd. 22 oz waxed bottle served in a Deschutes snifter. Bottled 6/15/10. A: Pours a dark, opaque black. A thin and bubbly dark mocha head forms on the pour and quickly dissipates to a thin ring. Some light splotches of lace are left behind. S: Light bourbon upfront melds nicely with light smokiness and roasted malts. There is a sweet, almost Tootsie roll like, chocolate flavor in the periphery that plays nicely with the smoke. T: The bourbon is upfront just like nose. There is a more dark fruit presence with a touch of smoke. Roasted marshmellow, sweet chocolate, and toasted malts with the slightest hint of oak. M: Medium bodied, a touch thin from the barrel aging. Very smooth and creamy with a little smoke on the finish. The carbonation level is medium to low. O: This has held up remarkably well and is drinking pretty well right now. I canít see it getting any better though and would drink it now. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 08-10-2012 Shared this guy at DLD. Thanks to rnorgart for the bottle. A: Pours dark black color with a dark tan head forming on the pour. It recedes quickly to a thin ring. Some splotches of lace are left down the glass. S: Very sweet smelling up front. Big whiskey character with a fair amount of oak. Nice notes of chocolate and roast with a light dark fruit as well. T: Same as the nose. Whiskey up front with a nice hit of oak and sweet caramel notes. Roasty with some dark fruit and a slight bit of heat. M: Medium to heavy bodied with a creamy and slick mouthfeel. Medium carbonation level. O: A nice stout overall with a big whiskey profile. Iíve enjoyed some of the iterations more, but this was nice. Serving type: bottle 05-24-2013

Bottled shared by Lunch at my tasting on August 7, 2010. Thanks Paul! A: This version of Blackbeerd appears a near black shade and has a decent sized head that leaves a fair amount of lacing on the glass. S: Alcohol and rich, roasted malt. T: This was definitely an improvement over the regular Blackbeerd. The beer still tastes a little too hot, but has a bolder, richer flavor than the original, making the heat more forgivable. M: Surprisingly smooth. Warming alcohol in the finish. D: A tasty beer. Iíd be happy to drink it again.

Bottle. Pours black with off white head. Nose/taste of bourbon, oak, vanilla, roasted chocolate malt, lightly smoked black malt and bitter coffee. Medium body. Finishes with a sweet bourbon/oaky roasted chocolate malt.

Dark black in color, clear with a thin tan head. Rich thick chocolate and bourbon aroma. Tons of bourbon in the flavor with thick coffee and chocolate flavors. Very rich and thick.

From notes. First reviewed 7/15/2011. Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a tulip. Part of a 09, 10, Buffalo Trace, Jack Daniels side by side. From notes. Much like the other versions, this pours a mahogany, nearly black color with brown edges. A tan cap retains nicely and leaves a bit of lace. With the smokey and acidic aroma and flavor of the base beer, it is clear that barrel aging has helped. Bourbon, vanilla, and toffee overlay a sweetness to the roasted malt, coffee, and smoke. The taste is very nice. The flavor starts out with a mellow sweetness. Vanilla, bourbon, and toffee set the stage for full roasted malt and coffee in the middle. The smoke, oak, and a bit of chocolate add some additional character toward the end. The beer is more mellow here as well. Fairly smooth, medium bodied, with creamy medium carbonation. A light sweet stickiness lingers on the lips. This was the winner of the 4 versions I tried. The sweetness did not run rampant, but the Buffalo Trace was able to erase some of the errant flavors in the base beer.

Bottle shared by Blake at STL RB gathering, thanks man! Poured side-by-side with non-barrel-aged version. Pour is a touch more viscous with notes of smooth roasted malt, vanilla, light brown sugar, and faint cocoa. This is much smooth than the regular and most of the ashy and earthy flavors of the regular are replaced by notes of bourbon and vanilla with smooth roasted malt. This is great.

UPDATED: DEC 29, 2012 22 oz. bottle shared by bsuedekum- thanks again, Blake! All these Blackbeerds have been long-time wants, so he knocked two out with one punch. This one was tried side-by-side with a regular one; it was bottled 6/15/10, compared to 12/21/10 for the regular so this was an earlier base batch. Very big, bourbony aroma with vanilla, molasses, toasted oak, caramel, roasted malts, and some dark fruits. Flavor followed along the same lines. Very smooth, with the ABV fairly subdued. Medium-bodied, with a smooth, rich, roasty, sweet mouthfeel and low carbonation. Huge improvement over the regular Blackbeerd, though I donít know if it was the batch or the barrel or both. Re-Rate: The 11/27/12 bottling is solid but clearly young; very roasty and rich and might be served well by sitting 6-12 months. Just a hunch. Otherwise, still a very good imperial stout but the 2010 release was better.

Sampled at the StL RB gathering. It poured a deep black color with a small tan head. The aroma was of vanilla, bourbon, and some peat. The taste was sweet vanilla and caramel, bourbon with a smokey, roasted bitter and dry finish. Very good Imperial Stout.
