Blackbeerd is a sneaky sumbitch, wrapping its arms around you in a lovely stout embrace, all the while slipping hops into your glass when your back is turned. The beer undergoes a notable transition from dry to sweet as it warms, yet maintains a firm, bitter finish that turns the chocolate center into a smoky mocha fade. (That’s kind of fun to say: Smoky Mocha.) The alcohol tickles but doesn’t linger, making this pint disappear startlingly fast. Awesome stout. (2/10/09)

Reviewed from notes. Poured into a snifter. Appearance is close to black with a short mocha head and some legs. Nose is a lot of roasted malt as well as some light smoke. Chocolate, vanilla, and some roast. Taste is overly smoked and roasty. Chocolate and coffee fall into the background. The roast and smoke work together well in the background. Drinks fairly well, but the taste is just a little too far in a single direction. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-09-2010

I drank this from a 22oz bomber, bottle # 2236, into an Orval glass. The beer pours black with a very light tan head that only rises a quarter of the inch, but is gone right away. The lacing is light. The aroms is on the lighter side but very nice and balanced. It starts off very malty, super great sweet notes of chocolate with a light hoppy finish. The taste is pretty nice. It starts off a little sweet then has a very strong bitter coffee finish. This would be great if it was a little more complex and had a little sweeter start. The feel is on the lighter side, with a lasting bitter finish. There is a weird metallic finish that comes several seconds later. The drinkability is ok.

This pours from the bottle with a black color and a brown head. The aroma has a smooth roast character to it as well as hint of licorice and big, aromatic chocolate like notes.

The flavor is more roast focused than the aroma would suggest and it even gets a bit burnt and acidic from the huge roasted grain expression found in this beer; I wouldn’t quite call it harsh though, but it definitely lingers quite a bit on the palate. There is an astringency that lingers on the tongue, and this can be a bit too much at times. This doesn’t quite have the malt and sweet / rich character to hold up to the ample roast character that makes up the dominant character of this beer. In the end, the aroma had me thinking this beer was going to be more tasty and balanced than it actually ended up being; certainly not anywhere close to being a bad beer, but I definitely was wishing for more malt lushness to balance out the somewhat too overwhelming roast character

Bottle thanks to Joe at RBWG, the last brew of the night. Pours a totally black color with a medium tan head. A smooth fruity and chocolate nose, some light hops. The flavor is a creamy rich roasted malt and coffee beer, lots of chocolate and light metallic hops. Enjoyable and well done.
