Tasted on 1/7/13 from a 22oz bomber bottle obtained in a trade quite a while ago. Pours extremely dark brown with an average brown head that very slowly recedes to average lace. The nose is super dark with tons of coffee, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, a touch of smoke, and an almost fruity molasses note. The flavor is the same with the coffee, chocolate, cocoa, molasses, smoke, and just a touch of vanilla and nice bitterness. The body is full with average but soft carbonation and a long bitter dark chocolate and coffee, lightly smoked, and hint of vanilla finish.

Bottle @ home. Opaque pitch black color, full sized dense brown head. Aroma is malts, light roast, chocolate, a hint of liquor. Taste malts, again light to moderately roasty, slightly sweet malts in the distance, chocolate, a touch of mocha, softly bitter. Medium to full body, suitable fairly soft carbonation, velvety mouthfeel, oily texture. Absolutely delicious! One of the best beers I’ve ever had. Fantastic!

corby112 (2804) - philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 11, 2015
Bottled on 12.09.08 Pours viscous, jet black and completely opaque with a one finger dark beige head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Streaks of spotty lacing left behind. Sweet, slightly roasted malt aroma with a balance of burnt sugar, dark malt and cocoa. Notes of dark chocolate, oatmeal and spent coffee grain countered by lactose, bakers chocolate and toffee. Stronger alcohol presence than expected. Tastes very similar to the aroma with the addition of a surprising hop forward flavor that has somehow held up for four years. Dry and earthy with subtle resinous pine flavor that lingers over the complex malt profile into a dry finish. Underneath the earthy hops, there’s a nice balance of sweet and roasted malt notes. Lots of dark chocolate, licorice and alcohol sweetness countered by slightly acrid, roasted coffee bean flavor along with oatmeal, toast and burnt sugar. More alcohol flavor than I prefer but not hot per say with a well masked ABV. A decent imperial stout but the barrel treatments of this beer are a vast improvement.

22oz bottle pours a thick black with some foamy, tan head. Nose has a ton of licorice and molasses, booze, bread, caramel, dark chocolate. Flavor is very chewy with malt and molasses, licorice, coffee, chocolate, burnt caramel. Full bodied but also dry. Well nuanced, lots of character.

Yar, from a 500ml bottle. Poured a dark caramel cola color with a small wispy off-white head, as dark as yar soul matey. Aroma was light dark fruits, some bitter dark chocolate. Flavor more heavy on the dark fruits, light bitter chocolate.

BOD 4/1/15. Pours black as a starless night. World class head volume, lacing and retention. Rich complex nose of dark fruit (plum, prune, date, fig), chocolate, molasses and roast over a subtle hop background. Although not barrel aged, a distinct bourbon note is quite evident Full body with a nice creamy texture. Normal carbonation level with a touch of effervescence in the middle and a subtle burst in the finish. The flavor profile is good with a rather strong intensity of alcohol that tends to mute everything else, which hurts complexity and results in a lack of balance. However, after about half a glass, the palate adjusts to the raw alcohol and does allow for flavor complexity to emerge (translation - this is a sipper). It begins with a wave of dark chocolate over a rich molasses sweetness. The middle brings allows the dark fruit flavors to emerge, which are predominately prune and date. The finish is a slow sweet fade with a somewhat astringent alcohol bite, coupled with the associated heat and pucker, and bourbon like flavor.
