Commercial Description:
Jack Daniels barrel-aged version of the original Blackbeerd. Released 3/09, in black wax-topped bottles. Total bottle release: 96. As dark as the legend of Blackbeerd himself, behold the Imperial Stout. Sweet malts battle roasted grain on the decks of yer tongue. Like a blast from a cannon, hop are followed by smoked malt. Hold on to yer booty, a dark stouts a brewin’. (9.3% abv) Seasonal-winter. And yes, this IS a lighter bodied stout-easier drinkin’ in the not so cold south. Ingredients: Two-row barley*, Black, Caraffa*, Roasted barley*, Smoked, Oats* and Extra Special* malts, Magnum and Palisades hops, ale yeast and filtered water.

This pours deep darkness with amber edges and thin tan head. The aroma is mild with roasted to burnt malts moving slowly into caramel malts and faint chocolate. The taste begins with modest amounts of oak and bourbon notes bleeding into dark roastiness, chocolate and a mild sense of caramel malts. It ends with lingering burnt malts, some chocolate malts and a faint level of caramel malts.

Pours black. Nose is sweet malts, chocolate, coffee, roasted grain, some dark fruit esters, hints of bourbon. Flavor is tiny bourbon, dry wood, sweet sweet malts, roasted grain, mild smoke, cocoa powder and coffee grinds.

Bottle… Tar black ale with a small, creamy, beige head. Great retention. The nose is nutty with notes of chocolate, avocado and a smidge of sourmash whiskey. Full-bodied and silky with soft carbonation. Tastes a bit like a mocha latte with a thimble-sized shot of sourmash whiskey. Lengthy, burnt, bittersweet finish.

bottle, Tampa xmas gathering pours oil black, off-white/tan head. Aroma loads of malts, caramel, chocolate, barrel, light vanilla Flavor, barrel, wood, roasted malts, chocolate; nibs, grains, notes of coffee, toasted malts, mouthfeel is thick, coated with whiskey goodness and sweet vanilla. Not really the BA beer I was expecting.

bomber - thanks to the most badass, malt liquor loving ratebeerian of them all, riversideak, for sharing such a lame brew; pours clear black with tan head; sweet nose of vanilla, graham crackers, cookies; wow, perfectly smooth and rich with mild oak, lots of sweetness, bourbony goodness; plenty of roast remains which creates a very complete BA brew; for my tastes, this one was spot on; barrel compliments rather than dominates; chocolate, bourbon, touch of smoke; killer brew; in other words, this beer sucks...thanks a lot brah!!

22 oz bottle poured into a snifter produced a dark black beer with a short lived 1 1/2 finger head. The smell was pretty good and consisted of whiskey, malts and smoke. The flavor was a bit of a let-down for my preference towards Imperial Stouts. Despite the wonderful whiskey aroma I could hardly detect the whiskey. There was an overwhelming chocolate presence and a very dry finish. For me the body was too light and the carbonation a little too strong. Would like to try again to see if it was a bad bottle.

Nose is full of vanilla, chocolate, and roasted malts. Light coffee notes too. Dark pour, more or less black, some foamy beige areas floating around in the beer. Lots of chocolate, good barrel notes - vanilla, whiskey, roast comes through as well as a little bit of smoke. Dry finish, but some good barrel sweet notes. Smooth, creamy, well made. Good ass impy.
