muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA May 24, 2008 22 ounce bottle from Woodmans in Janesville, WI (May 2008), served at cellar temperature from an Isenbeck Pils glass. Pours a hazy to opaque bright gold, with moderate to large quick-disintegrating white head.....orange-scented, lightly farmy and faintly spicy aroma, reminiscent more of a witbier than anything else, little in the way of earthy character and too sweet and floral perhaps, though pleasant enough....the body is lightly bitter, acidic and tart throughout, citric (orange, grapefruit) and somewhat sweet especially towards the finish, which does however get fairly bitter....to me this tastes like a cross between and IPA and a wit, and it’s drinkable enough, but not terribly exciting and certainly not what I think of when I read "saison." Still, glad for the find; had no idea that it or its brewery were NLA. bikesandbeers (468), Los Angeles, California, USA May 11, 2008 22oz bottle picked up from bevmo a near or so ago. poured a nice golde with a full white head. funky yeast and some citrus in the nose. Tast is nice a balenced with hints of carmel fruit and a nice tart citrus finish. a nice brew. bleeng (587), Spring near Beersel, Texas, USA Feb 28, 2008 Sorry to see the brewery close. 22oz bomber. Initially pours bright gold and almost clear with a small white head. Nose is funk, grain, horseblanket, and lemony. Taste is bit light and evervescent with a light funk, barnyard taste. Very smooth. Second pour brings out the bottom with the yeast-nice cloudy yellow. Taste smoothes out and this second glass improves immensly. Nice domestic saison....RIP.... IEBAILI (123), San Diego, California, USA Feb 11, 2008 Earthy, musty smell jumps out as soon as I pop the cap on this 12 oz bottle, pours clear medium gold with big white head, smells of funk, slightly sour fruit, some lightly caramelized malt aroma, tase is pretty bold, a little tart, has a flavor something like the syrup in canned peaches - don’t take that the wrong way, this is a nice beer but a little heavy handed, perhaps rustic is a the word. That’s not necessarily bad in a saison, but this lacks the lightness and finesse of some of my favorites of the style. It’s worth mentioning that this beer is an excellent value at around a buck a bottle, that’s worth an extra point in the overall score to me. apoptosis (1316), Long Island, New York, USA Jan 12, 2008 brightly-colored saison, with a slightly hazy, golden yellow hue and an active lush of bubbles. Not a bad aroma. Slightly spicy aroma with lots of citrus and coriander. The beer is quite sweet, actually. Honey or just plain barley malt, I can’t tell, but its a little much for me. Nice medium carbonation makes the beer feel good, but it is too sticky for me. notalush (2627), Denver, Colorado, USA Jan 12, 2008 Bottle from santa - slightly hazy golden beer, with an effervescent body, and a thick ring of foamy lace - honey-sweet aroma, with light spices, wildflowers, and the faint tang of bitter orange peel - the flavor is quite sweet, and remains so throughout - mostly honey and light floral character - some orange peel and coriander arrive late, along with very mild peppery spice - a tad too sweet, and lacking complexity, but I’m still enjoying it. UofFkid (108), Orlando, Florida, USA Dec 28, 2007 Tap. Golden yellow pour w a nice head. Very fruity. Aftertaste lasted a bit longer than I’m used to. Decent. omhper (12153), Stockholm, Sweden Dec 19, 2007 Bottled. Hazy deep golden, rich airy head. Concentrated orangey nose with some spicyness. Sweet and juicy, lightly minerally. Densely malty withe medium body. Interesting and tasty, so even if it feels somewhat artificial and lacks the complexity and lively yeast character of the better Belgian examples I still enjoy it a lot.
