A beast of a dark old ale, with caramel, molasses and roast malt on the taste, and some liquorice on the finish.

Dover Fest 2011. At this strength this is more of a festival beer than a pub beer. Pubs are nervous about selling beers this strong. It’s very sweet initially, then in come the bittering hops. Dark in appearance, though most of the malt taste is coming from well boiled pale malt. The brewers call it an Old Ale, and I understand why, though it does lack some of the licorice, Christmas Cake, etc, flavours of an Old.

Cask, handpump 8% at The Cambridge Blue, Cambridge Sat 14th April 2012 with Loz Pours almost black with a smattering of bubbles. Bit sweet with black treacle showing, there is a middling bitterness and the beer sits quite heavy in the mouth. Dark sugars and a little dark fruit show, ok beer but overall I wasn’t too impressed with this. A6 A4 T6 P3 Ov11 3.0

Chelmsford Beer Festival. 8.0% version. Opaque dark brown beer, residual tan head. Barleywine? Well there is a rich sweetish malt that has just a touch of dark character. Smooth and rich. Traces of chocolate and port. Sweetish candy fruits underneath. Peach, apricot. Finishes smooth and semi dry. Pretty tasty!

Cask, Leicester Fest 09. Very dark brown with a small beige head. Aromas are dark treacle with toffee and weetabix malts. Some salty soy. Flavours are yeasty and very fruity with raisins, pear and citrus with berries and vinous notes. Sweet and dark chocolate with bitter grapefruit on the finish. Nice stuff.

Cask gravity at Nottingham BF 2007. Heavy, thick dark beer, stilton flavours. Thick. Good thick malty strong ale. Some nuttiness. Very impressive. Good balance. Alcohol doesn’t destroy it. Very drinkable actually. Good, good malts.
