3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 bhensonb (7581) - Woodland, USA - FEB 6, 2011
Bomber from the Sunrise BevMo. Beginning to think Coastal Fog is a BevMo brand. :) Pours very dark brown with a foamy 3 finger tan head. The aroma is very smoky. Kind of like a pig caught in a shed fire. There’s bacon, but there’s burnt wood char. Med plus body. Flavor is very strong smoke with an undertone of chocolate and burnt malt. I’ve been down on RCBC, cause it seems they often skimp on ingredients. Not this time. Unless smoke isn’t an ingredient. Finishes woody/smokey with a memory of chocolate.

Bottle; poured a dark cola/auburn brown with a khaki colored head. Aroma of smoke, leather, caramel, must with a hint of earth/hops in the end. Flavor was a bit mellow for the style, a touch of wateriness too it. Alot of roasted malt and caramel, with a bit of smokiness and earth in the finish. A pleasant beer, but not blown away.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 IrishBoy (3335) - Bakersfield, California, USA - SEP 4, 2011
Bomber from BevMo online (Pleasanton) Nose is chocolate, roasty coffee, and lightly charred oaky smokiness. Clear, very dark brown with a small, lightly lacing beige head. Flavor is moderate smokiness, coffee, and smaller hints of chocolate. Not overly smoked like some smoked ales.

Served from a 22 ox bottle from BevMo. The appearance is a deep brown black with a medium tan head. The aromas are moderate smoke, coffee, and malts. The flavors follow that up. The smoke flavor isn’t huge it more rides on the coffee as extra roast. Pretty dry flavors. The mouth is medium bodied. A pretty tasty medium bodied brew.

Poured from a bomber into an English pint glass. Color is dark brown/black with a smaller tan head. Aroma is sort of muted for a porter: mostly sweet malts with some roasted malts as well as a slight hint of smoke. Flavor is similar to the aroma, weak sweet malt flavor at the start that transitions into slight roasted/smokey flavors towards the finish where some resinous hop flavors linger into the aftertaste. Palate is thin and watery for a porter. Overall the flavors could have been more pronounced, but I did like the balance of the hop flavors which I think are normally difficult to detect in most porters and stouts.

Pours a deep black color with a thin tan head. Soapy aroma with a hint of vanilla. Some malt as well but nothing too serious. Could be thicker with a heavy taste. But not too shabby.

18-Mar-11 (22-oz bottle: Purchased 23-Feb-11 for $3.99 at BevMo in Solana Beach, CA) Of the Coastal Fog brews that have been released to date, the Smoked Porter is probably the best, and certainly the boldest. But that’s not to say this is an excellent beer. Chocolate, moderate roast, black toast, licorice, sweet baking spices, and roasted nuts in the entry, but there are lighter notes of smoke and fruits. However, the beer finishes with a distinct flavors of cola and ripe red apples and tastes moderately sweet. Medium body seems a tad light, but is acceptable, and medium carbonation is somewhat prickly. The nose features aromas of cola, smoked meat, mint, licorice, and medium-dark chocolate, with moderate amounts of smokiness evident. Medium red-brown in color with obvious clarity and transparency through the center of the glass. The pale-tan head pours to half an inch, but settles away fairly quickly in a near-fizzy manner to a thin ring. Not a bad smoked beer at all, but not of high enough quality to make me want to buy it again.

[Bottle] A large bottle of this was on sale at BevMo, so decided to try it even though I had never heard of it before. Inky black pour with a mocha brown head. Fragrant smoke and malt aroma. The taste is main consists of smoked malts, with notes of roasted coffee beans, vanilla, oak and chocolate. Very little hop contribution here. Very malty, but a tad on the thin side. I actually enjoyed this one despite a few minor flaws.
