UPDATED: FEB 13, 2008 (On tap) Clear, dark copper with a small, rough, off-white head leaving some laces. Fat, peachy hop aroma. Medium body with sweetish caramel and honey with lots of peaches and tropical fruits before a dry and hoppy finish. Very well made and harmonious beer. But there’s nothing much Belgian about it. 310108 and 060208

Draught at Cock & Bull, Auckland. Copper colour, slightly hazy. Orangey perfumy nose. Sweet with remarkably soft mouthfeel. Very flavourful - almond, caramel and hay, yet it feels pleasantly light in the mouth.

Good amber chestnut colour; no head left. Very good, aromatic hops nose, but some ureum. Good cookie malts taste, balance sweet-bitter is near perfection. Cookie malts with hops making it halfway GB-USA. Wouldn’t call it Belgian, though. Warming MF, well bodied. Tasted it rather poor circumstances, which makes it all the more remarkable. Deserves rerating, if ever...

on tap at brewtopia06. i just assumed that this was an ipa, didn’t find any real belgian character. it was still good, though. deep amber colour, aroma of cookie dough and pine, some fresh forest fruits and a pleasantly bitter finish

Tap at Beervana. Notes of toasted malts and grass on the nose. Earthy hops with a nice lemon zest presence in the taste. Quite a decent beer

UPDATED: FEB 12, 2008 Draught at the Cock & Bull in Newmarket (Auckland), settled to a clear brown with a foamy off-white head. A beautiful flowery hop aroma with a good earthy malt background. A good clean and crisp palate, a great flowery and fruity hop flavour with juicy malt. Goes more dry and bitter in the finish. Good enough to drink in pints.

On tap at the Malthouse in Wellington. Not sure of the genre but comes across like a fruity, hoppy pale ale, something you might see in the US. Dark amber, almost vienna lager like in appearance. Very mild nose with faint estery fruity notes. Fruits and hops to taste, a little offbeat but I can’t put my finger on why this is so. Classy and well built.

It is odd that we would look at this beer and feel that it is low in alcohol. 6.5% for a belgian ale? OK, these are meant to be session beers which in other countries could even be half the ABV. Good look in the glass and a fair nose with hop aroma and a delicate spiciness. Flavour is good and the alcohol content is noticeable. The best of the beers I tried at the pub and one that could take a bit of future finessing. I think they should drop the Trappist refernce too

12 May 2006 (AIBA 2006-Rating 11) - On tap. Big passionfruit, light malt aroma. Brown-red colour, good head and great sheet lacing. Sweet big passionfruit and big fruit flavour. Finishes big on fruit and a nice lingering nicely balanced aftertaste.

ABV is 7% must have modified receipie Red/amber in colour with thick white head. Big saaz hop and fruit flavours. Tastes similar to Dark star with higher abv and different colour. Supposed to be based on Belgain abbey style but is far from it. Does get better as it warms up though.
