COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Fermented for an extended period, this premium lager features an aromatic sweetness in its amber tones. With the combination of high quality malts, roasted sweet potatoes and beer craftmanship, this beer is unique to the Bushu area, featuring Kawagoe’s famous produce, Kintoki sweet potatoes. Take the time to full enjoy its flavors and the slightly elevated alcohol content. Called "Beniaka" Meaning Crimson Red, in honor of the colors of the sweet potatoes which helped produce it. Ingredients: Malt, Hops, Barley and Sweet Potato

Sampled in a 12oz. A rare dark brew from Japan. A really nice drinking brew with a taste of Sake. Pours dark, a bit of head and pretty smooth drinking.

Pours a rich brown with tan head that quickly disappears (just like the other Coedo I had...) to nothing. Sweet caramel malts on the nose. The flavor is reeeeeallly sweet, a bit overpowering. Kinda tastes like a cola soda, but with a bit of alcohol. Pretty unique for a "premium lager" though...

Bottle. Metallic roast aroma. Brown, off-white quickly dissapearing foam. Roast and caramel, flavor, bitterness in background. Medium to light body, fizzy. molassis retronasal. very average.

Bottle thanks to the chaps from vertical drinks. Alround rating: Very sweet, caramel and toffee malts, lacking hop in all aspects though there is a small pepperyness. Not a hottie.

333ml bottle. Also available on tap at the Kawagoe visitor’s center and omiyage shop. Kawagoe, where Coedo is based, is famous for it’s sweet potatoes and for this reason they included it in this lager. The beer goes well when you are sampling all of the sweet potato-flavored goods in the town, but on its own it just has an odd taste. Not a lot of hops. This beer is somewhat bready and malty.

Bottle thanks to drabmuh. Served in a taster glass. Pours an orange-copper color with a tiny head of bubbles that falls quickly. The nose has some sweet potato and a touch of caramel. Flavor starts off with caramel, sweet potato, and bread, but then is taken over by a strange off dryness. Very odd. Body is light and off kilter. Not a big fan.

I guess the issue is what sweet potato is supposed to do to the taste of a beer, with a hefty side order of why would you want to. For me the answers are ’nothing pleasant’ and ’no idea’ but this could be intolerance on my part. A gooey, sweet, rather plain and underpowered ruddy-brown beer in search of a point.

On tap 12.31.08 at the Blue Note in Tokyo. Clear orange amber, white head. Aroma is malty, slightly hoppy. Flavor is extremely sweet, malty and sugary. For me, this is not a drinkable beer.
