Coedo's beer is brewed from selected malts and hops with the technique of beer artisan, braumeister.

With the stark contrast of its clear golden hues and fluffy pure white head, this premium pilsener boasts a crisp refreshing taste. The name "Ruri" is Japanese for the gemstone Lapis, representing the pure clarity this beer abounds in.

330ml bottle bought at Gorgeous Wine & Cigar in Yuen Long; Golden colour; Less than half finger head and white foam which last for 1 minute; Small but sticky lacing with notable carbonation; Potent smell of malt, meaty yeast, corn syrup and faint grass; Light sweet taste of malt, earthy yeast with strong liquorices, bitter lime and sharp grassy hops; Mid to light body, thin but slick palate. Taste profile is initially medium note of minimally-sweet, strong lager malt, followed by stronger earthy meaty yeast, all wrapped around in a true-to-form Classic German Pils level potent hops bitterness and astringency, with lively liquorices, bitter limes (lemon is notably absent) and grass that quite impressive to the tastebuds. Pretty dry after taste, crisp and bitter to mouth.

Comments: This one holds several surprises: looks like an Urquell, smells like a macro, yeasty mouth feel reminds me of some good hefeweiss, and hoppiness is truly German Pils. Its aroma is a let down but everything else works out just fine. Bitter, rustic, and enjoyable in a simple way. A gem for German Pils lovers.

Well made beer with good head retention. Quite hoppy for the style and not at all grassy, more fruity undertones. A lemon aspect also runs through the body. Having said all that it’s a bit non descript, though would be good in a pinch, as it’s readily available.

Bottle. Pale yellow slightly hazy appearance with very small foamy white head, flat, bitter taste, roasty aroma, bitter finish. Did not like it very much.

Really average. Hoppy to smell, Yeasty start, carbonated fruity end, Oily palate from the amazing hops. Not bubbly enough for my liking.

Very clear and very pale. Grassy and dry with a slightly chalky bitterness. Not bad. Pretty drinkable.

Grassy hops on the nose with an earthy note. Pours clear blonde with little head. Very crisp and hoppy upfront, earthy and grassy with a very bitter flavor. Very surprising! Its not bad at all.

Can. Fruity, estery, with some grassiness in the nose. Thin, pale, slightly hazy, big head. Yeast dominates the initial flavors; some good sharp fruitiness in mid, along with a substantial hit of carbonation; finish is also sharp. Thin body. Some good interaction between the yeast and the bittering. But the malt flavors are fairly minimal. I wouldn’t really identify this as a pils.

Bottle from King&Godfree. Nicely hopped. Aromas of flowers, grass, and honey. Taste is nicely hopped, average length. Palate is oily, and medium bodied. Yellow, with a thin head.

Bottle (bottle conditioned). Pours with a hazy, fuller (deep for a pils) golden hued body with a medium sized white head that slowly fades. Low lace. Aromas are bready, malty, pils like rich character, mild DMS, hay, low sulfur. Otherwise clean yeast. Lightly fruity, nearly citrusy, tea, herbal like hop character. Flavors are quite sweet for a pils, massively under attenuated. Raw pilsner based wort flavor. Really sweet, iced tea, lightly metallic, medium bitter, lightly herbal hop character. Lingering bitterness. Grassy, hay, medium minerals. Lively bubbles, medium bodied. A bit sharp.

UPDATED: APR 18, 2014 Can from the local supermarket at home. Pours crystal clear blond colour with fluffy white head. Looks quite fizzy. Aroma is malty, lagery, and a bit vegetable. Bit strange. Taste is quite sweet, touch of fruitiness, but overall just quite like a regular lager. All in all, it’s ok, and it might have been one of the first Japanese craft beers, but doesn’t really taste that crafty to me. Rerate, 04/2014 Have heard Coedo are much better now, but still not convinced. Aroma is pleasantly fruity, but the taste is not really very nice. Sharp without being hoppy. More plastic than anything. Not horrible, but don’t get why people rate Coedo. Would much rather have a malts.
