COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Fermented for an extended period of time, this dark brew boasts a stunning contrast between the glossy black tone of the beer and the smoothness of the modest pale head. This glossy black beer is called "Shikkoku," named after the famed elegant jet-black lacquer work of Japan.

Pour on tap, clear dark reddish black pour with off white head, aroma brought notes of sour grain, some odd molasses with a hint of mint, some slight grainy noe with a touch of roast. Taste was a mix of roast, coffee into a bit of red fruit, some mint, herbal notes, finishing slightly dry, sweet. Weird.

On tap at CBM Jimbocho. Dark cola brown color with a nice head. Great carbonation and rich and creamy mouthfeel. Aromas of toffee, caramel, chocolate and brown sugar are present. Extemely well-balanced. Excellent mildly sweet and sour finish that is super smooth.

333ml bottle. Quasi black colour with a surviving red glimmer, average to huge, thick, frothy to creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, off-white to beige head. Multifaceted, dense, ’incremental’ aroma on a small, narrow, isolated section of the aromatic scale: roasty dark malty with strawy, smoky, nuttily, grainy overtones, hints of burnt coffee, fish fodder, dark bread, liquorice, burnt caramel. Taste is roasty dark malty, subtle sweetness, hints of coffee, chocolate, treacle, grainy coffee surrogate, diluted soy sauce, 海苔. Strikes every key on the dark malt claviature - pianissimo.

Bottle @ Blue Pig, Manchester. Very dark red with next to no head. Has some roasted malt notes with dark malts giving it a sweetness too.

Bottle shared by Calisky, 01/2015, merci. (Bb12/2019!) Ar: Roasted malts, light coffee, porter like metallics merging with exotic fruit peel like qumquat, lime, Nasi pear? T) leafy lops, roasted bread crust, coffee and black cocoa powder. Butterscotch and White grape and its peel add a fleshy texture to the already smooth, near-velvet mouthfeel finish. Impressive foreign Schwarz which shows that the style can be revived for the 21st century...

Couleur noire, très légère mousse beige. Nez malt grillé, café, chocolat noir avec note de fruits vert (fruit japonais?). Gout malté toasté, chocolat cremeux, chocolat noir, note café et réglisse. Bon corps bien rond. Vraiment nickel pour une Schwarz. Fin toastée, chocolat, cremeuse.

Bottle from a department store in Umeda. Served in a lager glass. A cola brown beer with ruby accents and a dense head of beige foam – this is a good looking schwarzbier. The aroma is soft mix cocoa, caramel and oats.Med-light bodied with a silky mouthfeel. The taste is a pleasant caramel upfront followed by roasted malts. It’s a really well balanced.

Sampled from the tap at Happy Gnome. Pours a clear brown with anearthyneown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has dark grains and chocolate with a light roast underlying. Flavor has chocolate up front with a growing roast and dark bread.

Coedo Shikkoku has a thin, cream-colored head, a dark brown appearance, some bubbles clinging to the bottom of the glass, and a bit of lacing left behind. The aroma is of vegetable matter (spinach, celery, beet juice), dark malt, subdued sweetness, and a touch of char. Taste is of all that, with minimal bitterness. Mouthfeel is light and watery, and Coedo Shikkoku finishes wet and soupy. Overall, for a beer with a vegetable soup character, it’s drinkable. RJT
