Fermented for an extended period of time, this dark brew boasts a stunning contrast between the glossy black tone of the beer and the smoothness of the modest pale head. This glossy black beer is called "Shikkoku," named after the famed elegant jet-black lacquer work of Japan.

Bottle@Hotel. Dry stout with a very strong coffee flavour. I’d never call this a Schwarzbier.

330ml botte from Fifth Element. I wasn’t expecting the thick black goodness that poured forth from the botte. Good tan head with a roasted malt aroma thick with coffee and smoke. Long smokey flavour that sits in the mouth for a long time. Unexpectedly very good.

Pours black with a quickly fading head. Nose shows chocolate, soy sauce, roasted malt. Somehow both sweet and salty smelling... More complexity shown in the flavours. Big cocoa and chocolate liqueur but also a bold roasted character with plastic notes. Body seems a little watery.

This beer was really really good. Pours black with a nice sized khaki head. Excellent flavors of cocoa, chocolate, coffee and caramel. Smells mostly of roasted cocoa and coffee. Slightly sweet finish and oily mouthfeel. Impressive beer.

Tap at ibrew Ginza. Dark brown, almost black. Aroma is soy sauce, bit of chocolate. Taste is similar but with a bit of cream in there too and a touch of fruitiness and spice. Not bad. I continue to be a sucker for Schwarzbiers.

Bottle from Vintage Cellars. Nice malty beer. Aromas of caramel and chocolate. Taste is sweet, with light bitterness, and average length. Palate is oily, and medium bodied. Dark brown, with a disappearing head.

Sampled on 3/31/2012. This Schwarzbier pours a medium black brown color from a 333 ml bottle. Small to medium sized white/tan foamy head, decent lacing and good retention. The aroma is roasty malts, chocolate and slightly smoky. A medium to lighter bodied Schwarzbier. The malts are chocolate, roasty malts and slightly smoky. The hops are herbal and earthy. Decent carbonation. Finishes a little sweet. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
