Fermented for an extended period of time, this dark brew boasts a stunning contrast between the glossy black tone of the beer and the smoothness of the modest pale head. This glossy black beer is called "Shikkoku," named after the famed elegant jet-black lacquer work of Japan.

Pours black with a thin tan head and a treacle aroma. There is a smooth dry dark molasses flavor with a licorice finish.

Sweet nutty chocolate aroma. Bittersweet coffee, quite hoppy and fizzy, smokey finish. Pretty smooth and enjoyable dark brew.

Bottle. Dark pour with a mocha head. Hint of almond, chocolate, coffee. Has a sweet and almost milk-like warmth in the aroma. Relaxing. Medium body and lighter (than others) alcohol makes this easy to drink and enjoy. Well balanced sourness, sweetness and bitterness.

From the 350 ml. bottle with a little Japanese Script on it. The pour is dark brown to black with a modest head that fades. Very dark in color. The aroma is sweet and malty for the most part with an odd molasses thing going on. The body is medium to full and fairly creamy. The taste is incredibly sweet and malty with little to no hop notes found.

Bottle recieved chilled direct from the brewery. Similar in style to an english dry stout, but verging on the watery side. The usual suspect expected with roast malt, but very thin in the finish. Overall very dull, and whilst clean and sessionable, has nothing of interest.

330ml bottle bought at Gorgeous Wine & Cigar in Yuen Long; Clear opaque black colour; Razor thin head and residual beige foam which fades in 20 seconds; Minimal lacing and not much carbonation; Fragrant aroma of burnt coffee and roasted malt; Pleasant smokey taste of roast dark malt, black coffee, burnt toffee, dark chocolate, liquorices, and grassy hops; Medium body with smooth, milky palate; Taste profile is dominated by very notable and smokey roasted dark malt, very pleasant roasted coffee and mild liquorices, all underlined by nice, low-key milky palate throughout; Hoppiness is mild grass plus mid-strength, comfy bitterness, with a lingering and memorable finish. Slightly dry after taste, bitter but fairly easy to mouth.

Comments: I am totally in love with this one! After a few sips and you’ll realize not only it features all the niceties in a Schwarz - black colour, right body, mild and pleasant roast malt aroma, good roasted coffee taste, and smooth as silk palate - its goodness makes it more than just a good Schwarz, it feels like a stripped down cousin of Guinness FES, and I can’t imagine if get a bit more creamier and a sweeter malty character, it could mount a serious challenge against Guinness. For now , It stands as good as any nice Schwarz, and I can’t get enough. This one is a winner!
