COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Fermented for an extended period of time, this dark brew boasts a stunning contrast between the glossy black tone of the beer and the smoothness of the modest pale head. This glossy black beer is called "Shikkoku," named after the famed elegant jet-black lacquer work of Japan.

2007 Bottle (but still surprisingly decent). Roasty with hints of licorice and caramel. Lightly smoky. Thick for a schwarzbier - getting closer to stout range here, but quite nice.

Deep brown with a rocky, beige head. Roasted malts, light smoke, earth, caramel. Medium, soft body. Light roasted malts, smoky, molasses, herbal notes, and a touch of vanilla. A real nice schwarz; I wish it wasn’t the hardest of the Coedo line to find.

Blackish and stouty, filthy tan collar and lace. Fat and persistent. Brine, chocolate, smoke and bramble aroma. Bittersweet, burnt and swimming with yeast extract, cocoa and roast. Baltic-like, but creamier. Dry and attenuated with a burnt toast-like lingering bitterness. Too thick and ’glossy’ for a schwarz? Richly roasty, massively drinkable stout. ’

Medium beige head does not last. Black body goes dark red-brown at edges. Delicate burnt caramelly aroma,very harmonic. Sweetish burnt caramelly taste with chocolatey notes. Very clear and distinct. Sooty burnt caramel aftertaste lingers for a long time. Very nice. (0.33l bottle from Naito-san.)

355 ml bottle. Translucent dark brown. Nice little chocolate head. Aroma of lightly roasted malts, caramel and burnt brown sugar. Sweet-flavored; dark malts, dark chocolate, notes of coffee and licorice. Very mildly hopped. Soft mouthfeel. Harmonious, easy drinking. Yum.

355 ml bottle. Dark brown bordering to black with some copper hues. Small off-white fine-laced head. Oily roasted malt aroma. Some caramel, licorice and dark chocolate. Low carbonation level. Smooth texture. Well-balanced.

A rather thin, sweet, mild schwarzbier (maybe even a dunkey) that’s got a lovely flavor profile if you like that sort of thing. I can’t wait to try their Vienna. Found it at a 7-11 in Tokyo. One of my favorites!

Deep browny red (almost black) with an almost non existent tan bubbly head. Roasty aroma with coffee and pumpernickle bread. There was a bit of skunk off the bottle initially, but it did not remain. Flavours of coffee, evenly roasted malts with a bit of pepper. Molases and some fruity bitters and maybe a trace of smoke. Quite nice

UPDATED: JUN 20, 2008 My Bottom Line:
Toasted bread sandwiches the caramel maltiness into a simple union sealed in an oily, svelte body. This is a clean and efficient Schwarzbier, nothing less, nothing more.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam skirts the copper-tinged black.
-Roastiness is rather mild, but the malt profile still works.
-Carbonation is harmless and fits the silky mouthfeel.
-That toasted bread dominates the nose, and reappears in the finish.
