Fermented for an extended period of time, this dark brew boasts a stunning contrast between the glossy black tone of the beer and the smoothness of the modest pale head. This glossy black beer is called "Shikkoku," named after the famed elegant jet-black lacquer work of Japan.

330ml bottle bought at Gorgeous Wine & Cigar in Yuen Long; Clear opaque black colour; Razor thin head and residual beige foam which fades in 20 seconds; Minimal lacing and not much carbonation; Fragrant aroma of burnt coffee and roasted malt; Pleasant smokey taste of roast dark malt, black coffee, burnt toffee, dark chocolate, liquorices, and grassy hops; Medium body with smooth, milky palate; Taste profile is dominated by very notable and smokey roasted dark malt, very pleasant roasted coffee and mild liquorices, all underlined by nice, low-key milky palate throughout; Hoppiness is mild grass plus mid-strength, comfy bitterness, with a lingering and memorable finish. Slightly dry after taste, bitter but fairly easy to mouth.

Comments: I am totally in love with this one! After a few sips and you’ll realize not only it features all the niceties in a Schwarz - black colour, right body, mild and pleasant roast malt aroma, good roasted coffee taste, and smooth as silk palate - its goodness makes it more than just a good Schwarz, it feels like a stripped down cousin of Guinness FES, and I can’t imagine if get a bit more creamier and a sweeter malty character, it could mount a serious challenge against Guinness. For now , It stands as good as any nice Schwarz, and I can’t get enough. This one is a winner!

12 ounce bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar. Pours a deep black color with a medium beige head. A sweet nutty nose. A nice flavor of metal, roast, smoke, overly roasted coffee beans, dusty dry earthy malts. Pretty nice and flavorful. Actually, this is really tasty bordering in on a porter’s general flavor. Nice. 66th Japanese rating.

Bottle@Hotel. Dry stout with a very strong coffee flavour. I’d never call this a Schwarzbier.

330ml botte from Fifth Element. I wasn’t expecting the thick black goodness that poured forth from the botte. Good tan head with a roasted malt aroma thick with coffee and smoke. Long smokey flavour that sits in the mouth for a long time. Unexpectedly very good.

Pours black with a quickly fading head. Nose shows chocolate, soy sauce, roasted malt. Somehow both sweet and salty smelling... More complexity shown in the flavours. Big cocoa and chocolate liqueur but also a bold roasted character with plastic notes. Body seems a little watery.
