2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 VENOM (941) - USA - MAY 15, 2002
Sheer copper with a foamy light tan head. Light carbonation. Dissipating soapy aroma with some toffee and light roastedness. Medium body. Nicely malted with hints of toffee, chocolate and roasted malts. But..there’s an offsetting detergent like flavor, lingering as well, that is very offputting. Not yeasty, but soapy. Like they forgot to wash their tanks out or something. It’s too bad because the underlying malt flavor and subtle British hop spiciness shows potential. Finishes toasty with some light caramel sweetness, mixed in with the detergent flavor.
2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 Thorpe429 (3823) - Alexandria, Virginia, USA - APR 14, 2011
On tap at the brewpub in Coeur d’Alene in August 2009. Couldn’t put this review in with the rest of my backlog earlier, as this place was listed as closed for a period of time.
Pours a moderate bronze-copper color with a short head and a bit of lacing. The nose brings a bit of light caramel and toffee. The flavor is about the same. Nothing too terrible here, it’s just quite, quite plain. Feel is a bit thin. Not a terrible beer, but no real reason to drink it other than the fact it was sitting in front of me.

Tap at the Brewery. Chestnut color with a small ecru head. Floor malt and caramel aromas. Hints of floral hops. Flavors of the malt and toasted grains come through quite well. Nutty finish and linger. Looking at the other re views I would say freshness matters with this one. One of the better brews at the brewery.

On cask at steam plant grill in Spokane. Highly enjoyed this offering...nice lingering, roasty finish...to match a hefty malt character, easy drinking. Simple, straight forward, but enjoyable.

UPDATED: SEP 23, 2007 From Spokane Steamplant taproom, cask version. Aroma is roast malt forward followed by woody notes, vanilla, nuttiness but no toast character. Appearance is medium/dark brown with a very low off-white head. The flavor is simple with bready roast malt, no hop character, and very smooth. Mouthfeel has very low texture with no carb feel, warm, very creamy. Overall, a strong, simple, good brew. From Spokane Steamplant taproom, draught version. Aroma is toast, nut, bread, low caramel, light dark fruit and no hop character. Appearance is a clear copper brown with a good off-white head. Flavor is medium sweet malt forward followed by some carbon and cream flavors with low/med bittering and some nuttiness. Mouthfeel is medium/low bodied with a low spritzy carb feel. Overall, the hop character is a bit too low for the style, but it’s still a good beer and easy drinking. A must try for someone who loves all-malt beers.

Fourth stop during the ABA Beer Tour ’07 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Sampled on tap at the downtown brewpub. Pours a dark cola caramel color with a creamy off-white head that slowly dissolves with good retention. Aroma is complex with scents of molasses, maple syrup, flowery hops and creamy toffee. Taste is light to medium body, lightly carbonated with a light porter style character. Finish is lightly bittersweet and metalic.

Cask 10 oz’er at the Spokane Steamplant. Creamy of course, given the cask. Almost opaque brown. Wow, the aroma is a monster. Almost spicey, like nutmeg or cinammon. Interesting beer. Light body with that interesting spicy, earthy aroma. Again, nutmeg? BBQ rub? Paprika? Cayenne? Hmmmm ... (#2921, 5/18/2007)
