COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Bottle from Vinmonopolet Manglerud enjoyed at home
Pours dark brown, black in glass, big brown head. Smells of yeast, roast, malts, hints of smoke and earthy hops. Taste is moderate sweet, yeast flavors, coffee, very dry mouthfeel, moderate bitter finish with coffee and soil. Quite ok beer, but far away from what i call an imperial stout. More of a stout...or a porter...

Draft. A black beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, caramel, and alcohol. The flavor is sweet with notes of chocolate, roasted malt, and alcohol, leading to a dry roasted finish.

Aroma is smoked and with hints of chocolate and malts. Pitch black with huge light brown head that quickly disappears. Taste of some sweetness and some sourness. Thin with medium carbonation.

Yes, I agree, Astoria Black is a fitting name: there is no other way to describe the colour of this brew than "black". The large, espresso crema coloured head is creamy and dense, but doesn’t leave much lacing. However it never disappears completely, there is still a thin layer left in my glass when all the beer is gone. The aroma is strong, sweet and porter-like, with lots of dark chocolate, dark caramel, roasted notes and some sweet fruits in the back. The flavours however are much typical of a stout: heavily roasted or rather burnt with ash, liquorice and coffee in the back, and only traces of dark bitter chocolate. I also recover very little of the fruity stuff that I found in the aroma. The taste is light sweet and moderate bitter, i.e. not very imperial. The body is medium to full, the texture is oily with a light dryness in the finish and the carbonation is a bit too soft. A nice and powerful stout (or a very gentle imperial stout), with an interesting contrast between the sweet porter aroma and the burnt stout flavour.

Tap at The Lord Nelson, Copenhagen. Poured a deep mahogany with a frothy tan head and bags of lace. The aroma is dry and peaty leading to a rich medium to strong bitter flavour with coffee, liqourice and chocolate. The bitterness is strong on the palate and lives for a while in the aftertaste.

Sample from 50 cl. bottle. Pitch black with a tan head. Roasted aroma with licorice, chocolate, coffee and a hearthy amount of caramel malts. Taste is light bitter. Medium body, cremy texture. Finishes bitter with coffee and chocolate. Nice stout, lacks a bit as far as "imperial" goes. More drama, please!
