COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A delicious medium-dry sparkling cider (6%), hand-crafted from local Yarra Valley apples using a traditional rack and cloth cider press. Cool fermentation of the resulting juice, followed by cold filtration ensures the crisp apple character is retained and in the glass, this pale straw coloured cider exhibits very fine bubble & mousse retention. For a truly refreshing experience, enjoy Coldstream Cider served over ice, in the fashion made popular during the hot English summer of 2006. Currently available on draught at selected outlets and to be released in bottle in 2007.

The filtration seems to have taken the colour away too as this is one pale cider. Force carbonated, soda-pop bubbles leap like trapped salmon from the surface with just as much noise evident. Supple, light sweetness to the nose, a tinge of lemon, lime and pear with a candyish edge coming through. The apple itself subdued as it is on the palate. Sweet, almost artificial flavours come through as though Cottee’s cordial released their first alcoholic bevvie. Sour lemon fruit sides, a very dry finish, light tanginess and tannic showing. Very clean, although also very one dimensional. The body light and the carbonation active but not biting. This is just not my idea of cider. Apologies! (33cL, BB13/08/12, Dan Murphy’s, Currambine)

330ml bottle. Pours a ludicrously pale yellow, looking exactly like champagne, and nothing at all like proper cider. The nose has cane sugar, sweet nuts and a hint of lemon. Vanilla and cane sugar start it off, with some citrusy tartness coming in soon after. It is only really in the finish that any apple flavour is detectable. Just a typical commercial style cider, really - light, sweet and lacking almost any interest. Not offensive, just totally uninspiring.

From a bottle, poured into a flute. Champagne colouring with no head and moderate to high carbonation. Very fruit aroma, apples obviously and maybe pears as well. Sour, refreshing taste, very nice on the way down. Very refreshing, I quite like it.

Draught at Fox Hotel, Melbourne. I’ve noticed this cider is making an appearance in a few bars around the city. I’m guessing there must be some demand for it, but by no means is it a well made cider. Pours almost white with a yellowish hue with minimal carbonation. Aroma is sweet sugar coated apples and pear. The flavour is more grape than anything else. Dry finish and a touch spritzy on the palate.

Poured a very clear yellow, if that. Nose was dominated by apples and spice with some winey characters also detectable, perhaps due to the high abv.. Palate shows much of the same, apple and spice with the winey character popping up again on the back palate. Carbonation was rather lively, which served to enhance the perception of a dry finish. Was pretty good i suppose, though i’m not a huge cider fan. (exception being thorogoods golden apple beer!!)

...on tap at the brewpub. Very clear light yellow in the glass, with serious carbonation, maybe too much. Aromas were mainly of apples of course, with notes of grass. Flavor was also mainly apple, with hints of pear and white grape. Finished very dry and prickly, like a champagne. Wasn’t too bad, but I didn’t really like it.
