1.4 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 3/20 jehoey (765) - Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 23, 2006cask at Maltings: one of the most bland examples of a stout that I have ever tasted. For being called a chocolate stout I didn’t taste any chocolate, and the normal coffee and chocolate notes of a stout with barly present. there was a slight bit a of roasted taste and that’s all I can really say. hardly any aroma. beer poured opaque with some ruby color at the bottom. a bit watery in the mouth for a stout too.

Tasted this in the Esquire House, Glasgow (JDW) in November 2008. Cask, handpump dispense. Black ruby with light tints around the edges and a thin buff head. Sweet liquorice and dry vinous fruit present in the long aroma. Thin oily mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malts gives strong juicy blackcurrant fruit and weak mocha coffee notes. Dry bitter hop resins gives a dusty aftertaste with coffee granules. Finish is dry with coffee, toffee and almonds in the flavour. A decent session stout and highly recommended.

garnet red-brown with minimal head. Noticeable legs for a beer at 4.3 unusual. Hint of beech-smoke then rich roast barley on the nose. Robust body with bitter coffee, dark chocolate and burnt toast. Finishes with a not unpleasant coffee astringency.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 blankboy (5199) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUL 26, 2011
Bottle (500ml) shared with HogTownHarry & garthicus -- c/o garthicus. Pours dark brown with a small diminishing bubbly tan head. Mild aroma of cola, lightly roasted sweet malt and vanilla. Very watery flavour, like bottled cask beer, of roasted malt, chocolate. Quite thin, light bodied, no carbonation. Disappointing, just O.K. at best.

500ml bottle shared by garthicus with me a blankboy. Deep opague ruby with pretty much no head (what was, was frothy). Odd aroma - vanilla bean, grassy bitterness, light chocolate syrup, maybe a bit of paint thinner (6-). Taste - simple, cleaner, a bit of herbal bitterness, again background cheap chocolate syrup. Extremely thin and watery, pretty much no carbonation, and a sadly accelerated finish to what malt there was. Not offensive, but disappointing.
