COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask & Bottles, Regular;
A traditional Scottish Ale brewed for export. In the old days ales were taxed in shillings per barrel depending on the strength – so this malty and flavoursome ale is at the higher end of traditional beer strengths. Some claim to find a hint of smoke in 80/- ales – our slightly peaty water may well bring that out more – discover for yourself.

Bottle from Aldi Gorgie 110113 Dark copper, clear, fizzy white head
Aroma - Hint of caramel malts, nothing else
Taste of caramel malts, light bitter hops, touch of soft fruits, soft dark sugar
Palate - Medium to high carb, thin body, too much carbonation.
Overall - Over carbonated with a dull flavour. The IPA was better.

Bottle on the train from Edinburgh - 08/12/12. Hazed chestnut brown with a small off white/tan head that escapes to the edge and leaves a film. Nose is malts, light fruits, touch diacetyl. Taste follws, nut tone, darker fruit, light toffee. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, nitter finish. Average.

Very dark red beer with a strong, malty aroma and a head that dissipates quite quickly. Fruit and malt flavour that seems slightly watery and doesn’t have much by way of aftertaste.

Pours dark amber with a nice red glint. There’s a decent head to start with but it fades quite quickly.The nose has toffee apples and malt. The taste has caramel and biscuits and then the Apple note kicks in at the end. The palate has a light to medium body with a creamy texture and a.fairly clean finish. Overall, solid.

This was sucked out of a bottle at Glen Nevis Campsite nr Fort William, so I didn’t have a chance to check out the aroma, colour, etc! It tasted ok, seemed a good (ish) 80/- character, certainly better than the Colonsay Lager I tried a while back! Bought from the shop on the campsite.

A nicely dark brown for an 80/- enjoyable rich taste but not too strong. Slightly malty.

Bottled. A nut brown coloured beer with an off-white wisp of head. A sweet aroma with fruit and caramel. Thin in the mouth. Malty and fruity. Like a weak autumnal ale.
