Draft. Pours black with an off white tannish head. Aroma of an IPA. Up front of citrus, middle kind if fades but back end is a sweet bitter maltiness that lingers forever. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On draft at Pickwick and frolic. Pours blackish brown, solid khaki ring. Nose is piney, dank herbal hues, maybe some mint notes as well. Interesting and appetizing. Herbal resinous hops and yet not overly bitter. Gotta say, this is an outstanding beer as it's really drinkable and yet has tons of flavors going on. Well done ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft pour into a pint glass. Pours a dark brown to black with a nice sized head of khaki colored foam. The aroma has hints of black tea hiding behind grassy, earthy hops. The taste is bitter and dry. This beer really reminds me a lot of black tea. Medium bodied. Low to medium carbonation.

Taste is pretty solid to say the least. A great mix of hops and toasted malts. I enjoyed this one. Hop forward for sure but the malts make a great showing.

Draft. Poured clear dark brown color with an average to large frothy light brown head that lasted and produced excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy complex toasted earth hop and small malt aroma. Medium to full body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a standout beer.

Draft at CBC. Brown/black pour with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, light chocolate and pine, a bit of fruitiness. Flavors are of roasted malt, bitter pine and citrus rind, light bits of chocolate. Medium body, roasty and bittersweet with a lingering bitter finish. Overall, mostly like a very hoppy porter... correction.... a quite tasty hoppy porter... though I guess it could be a toss up as a hoppy porter or black IPA... though I still think black IPA is code for hoppy porter. They should consider bottling this one though, very nice brew.

The January 2011 Hop Odyssey beer. Boy, am I glad to see that this mission is extended another year. From what I can gather, this is very similar to last January’s "Black IPA" with some adjustments to the recipe. All’s well with me, Black IPA was the only one I missed last year. Growler brought over by Ryan011235 This beer really looks nice. Thick sheets of tan-gray lacing (if I’m honest the head is a very sickly strange color). The beer is a dark, solid black. One of the darker CDAs. The initial whiff is strong on pine. Subsequent aromas of citrus, white grapefruit and cocoa come out with warmth. There is also a big spice and floral element. Bitter pine starts the taste. Its is matched with a big spicy hopping. Things sweeten up with cocoa and the standard CBC pineapple and citrus. There is a fair level of dry roastiness. The feel is quite dry with a long, bitter finish.

UPDATED: JAN 15, 2010 Growler sample (which turned out to be two pints) to cap off the "From Russia With Suds" tasting on 1/2/10. Darkest brown/black pour with a medium beige head. Aroma is most notably hops. Those lovely citrusy and somewhat piney CBC hops that we all love so well. Nice roasted malt influence in there as well. Flavor also leans more toward the hop (same type) with enough roasty malt that you may be able to tell blindfolded that it’s a black IPA. Good stuff.

Sample from a growler at the "From Russia With Suds" tasting on 01/02/10: Pours almost black with dark brown around the edges and a thin and dense tan head that dissipates slowly. Thin rings of lacing on the glass. Roasty malt aroma with Centennial hops as well. Medium body with a moderately bitter hops character and flavors of toasted malt, dark chocolate and some citrus. The finish is hoppy with a lingering bitterness left behind. Pretty solid all around.
