3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a medium/dark brown with a light tan head.
Complex aroma of alcohol, dried fruits and caramel malt.
The flavor is boozy and sweet. Lots of the bourbon.
This might need time to mellow out.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: AUG 12, 2012 Draft at the Rhino in Missoula. Hazed brown, thick tan head. Aroma of toffee, fruit, silky bourbon, molasses. Taste has lots of thick sweet molasses and roast malt flavor, with dark fruit/rum-soaked fruit sweetness also, woody/earthy bitterness, velvety bourbon feel 3.9.... Splitting a bottle now, this stuff, is awesome, lots of rich sweetness, but also some earthy bitterness, lots of wood, molasses, dark fruits, some leather, tobacco. Have to buy a bottle and attempt to age for a year.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Oak and maple syrup aroma. Cloudy red copper, thin yellow head. Caramel flavor with nougat and walnut toward the end. Shmaltz every now and then comes up with something that really wows me.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
22 oz. bottle, pours a dark amber with a small tan head. Aroma is like a sherry, with caramel, dark fruits, boozy liqueurs and some wood. Flavour is quite sweet, with sweet sherry / brandy, caramel, candied sugar and some faint wood (though the barrels are not so pronounced in this aspect). A little cloying in sweetness, but quite solid. Actually enjoyed the original Human Blockhead more.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
On tap at Fireworks in Arlington VA. Pours a clear, root beer brown with a thin, creamy white head. Nose has some fruity, booziness of a dopplebock with some lurking sweetness, caramel, vanilla etc from the barrel. The nose is not bad though. The flavor is where things start to go downhill. There’s just too much residual sugar. It’s cloying, overly malty like an imperial pils. The barrel is there with vanilla, caramel, but it’s over the crappy lager base and it just doesn’t mesh. A little hot too.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Batch 1 / 523 cases. Bottled on 06/01/2011
22oz bottle. Reddish brown pour, thick foam of light tan. Aroma of hot bourbon, sweet vanilla, lagered malts. It is all bourbon in the nose, nothing but alcohol from a barrel scent. Sticky texture of sweet rich malts. Caramelized sugars, some earthy hops add leather character. Then the Bourbon character takes over. Smooth soft vanilla essence, slight alcohol burn, nice oak, with a hint of dark (American-ized) Bock Beer. This bottle might be the smoothest, most balanced, Bourbon barrel-aged beer I’ve had.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle pours dark brown/orange with brief beige head. Nice sweet aroma with bourbon and malts. Taste very boozy with bourbon prominent, sweet malts, vanilla and slight oak. Palate could be a bit thicker, slightly sticky. Finish bourbon and slight hops.
If you like sweet boozy bourbon-barrel beers (and I do) here you go. Really enjoyed the Buffalo Trace flavor.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22 ounce bottle - $10.99 at Olde Crabapple Bottle Shoppe in Alpharetta, Georgia. Batch No. 001, Cases 523. Bottling Date: 6/1/2011 (I wish other labels were so informative).
Appearance: Pours a deep, dark amber body with a very tall, lasting, light beige head despite a fairly gentle pour. Small smattering of lace on the way down.
Smell: Wood staves brushed with a caramel coating, moistened raisin bread, accents of vanilla and dried coconut with the Buffalo Trace bourbon being fairly prominent in the nose.
Taste: Sweet tastes of caramel and toffee overneath a vibrantly bready maltiness, then, a bit of vanilla, rum raisin, and a sprinkling of toasted coconut shavings before the soothing bourbon rolls in. A bit of spiciness darts in and out and amongst the various flavors. Malty, smooth, drying finish with a lingering bourbon element.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation.
Overall: While still sweet, the barrel treatment has most definitely curtailed the strong sweetness from the original brew. Now, to sit and enjoy this while my shepherd’s pie is finishing off in the oven.
