3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sampled from the tap at NotB. Poured a cloudy copper amber with a brown head that dissipated slowly to the edges. Aroma had a red wine tart note with some sweet grain, sweet bread and a bit of earthiness and a good amount of backing barrel. Flavor started with slightly sour red fruit with a growing sweet bread and grain note that leads in to a slightly dry finish with some backing barrel.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: SEP 16, 2011 Pouring at the Blind Tiger for Mike’s 50th birthday extravaganza. Had to throw this in as an edit due to putting my rating of Ithaca’s soured barrel aged version of this in the wrong spot. Problem now solved. Pours a light ruby and cola brown with a thin beige head. Malty, sweet, light soy sauce aromas. Sweet toast. Long pruney malt. Light booze, malt, more sweet malty soy sauce.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Deep brown amber pour with a thick tan head. The nose is spicy and fruity. Plummy with some nice Belgian yeast as well. Sweet and fruity with some raisiny/date sweetness. Sweet and a little bit woody. It tastes like the base of their Rejewvenator.

Draft at RnH with Andrew and Grandpop. Pours a dark brown body with no head. Aroma is sweet bourbon, oak, dark fruit, and sweet malt. Mouthfeel is thin to medium with great sweet bourbon notes of front and finishes with an interesting sour, tart twist. The geektoberfest title really through me off.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
In short: A strong sour-ish dark ale that throws a bunch of stuff at you. A fun mess.
How: Tap at Extreme Beer Fest 2011, Night Of The Barrels
The look: Cloudy burgundy body topped by a small beige head with good retention
In long: I noted this beer as “Ithaca Geektoberfest” because I think I remember getting it from the Ithaca stand. I hope I’m rating the right thing, that’s the only Geektoberfest I could find. Anyway, the nose and taste were all over the place. I notes sourness, roast, dark fruits, tannins, vinous, milk chocolate, grapejuice, booze, acetic acid, vanilla. And I could go on and on. This is more of a jumble of stuff than a complex beer per say. But the beer was fun mess. For beer geeks only, and with a name like Geektoberfest it’s pretty obvious this is a beer for beer geeks only. But craftbeer is so popular now. If we laid all the craftbeer lovers end to end we could circle of the planet. And 70% of us would drown.
