COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A dry hopped American Rye Pilsener. Obey the siren song of the mythological Coney Island Mermaid. Four spicy hops flow into seven golden malts. Perfect as a momentary distraction, or equally enchanting as a parade towards deeper delights. When beer tastes this good, and you donít have scurvy, you donít need a lime!

Clear yellow with minimal white head. I was immediately taken aback, in a good way, by the strong hop presence. Noble hops throughout with a clean malt/grain palate and crisp finish.

nice and refreshing it has the hop character and spiciness of an American dry hoppend rye brew. it is refreshing and just a touch sweet (MAYBE TWO TOUCHES). it has some of the characters of an American Pilsener just spill some and wait few minutes and give it a sniff. it" smells like an old bar but this beer is quite impressive otherwise. Grapefruit hops in the spicy Pils presence this is a real good session ale for the choosey. $4.99 for a 22 oz bottle at whole foods in Manhattan ? hey thatís schmaltz!

Draft at redlight redlight. Pours a golden yellow with a fizzy white head. Nice nose. Fairly hoppy. Hints of leaves and grass. Light but enjoyable flavor. Very dry, crisp and refreshing. A very likable pilsener.

Draught. Poured clear dark yellow with thick lasting head. Good malty aroma, hay and spring grass with a tiny citrusy note. Medium bodied, medium flavour with a lasting hop finish. Lekker on a hot day

On tap at the Brass Tap in Wesley Chapel, FL. Pours up deep gold with off white head. The aroma is fresh grains, toffee and spiciness. The taste begins and continues with yummy spices, rye and then picking up malty grains, toffee and then a mix of caramel malts and lager-y yeast creating a butterscotch type feel.

[Tap] Pours a bright golden color with a nice cap of white head. Grassy nose features fresh, crisp hops and clean grains. The taste is surprisingly true to style for a North German pilsner. Grassy bitterness is mixed with an touch of astringency. Lively carbonation. The rye malt provided a nice kick that blended well with the hop profile. Tasty and unique.

12oz bottle from Pickís poured into a shaker. Pours a lightly cloudy dark gold with a half finger of white head. Aroma of corn and light piney hops. Taste is light bitter. Pine hops and corn with a little bready malt. Light bodied with a slick texture. Lively carbonation and an average finish. Overall, not bad. Would be a great beer for drinking outside in the summer.

Adding rye to a hoppy beer, like a pale ale or an IPA, is a good idea because it imparts a nice spicy bite. But in a lager? Thatís the concept behind Coney Island Mermaid Pilsner. The rye doesnít make it a wholly unique-tasting beer, but itís enough to give it more flavor than your average lager.

I poured a 12oz bottle into a pilsner glass.

Appearance: Pure gold color; almost crystal clear but a slight haze to it; plenty of visible carbonation. Forms a large, bright white, foamy head which retains and laces about average.

Smell: Familiar lager aroma with a hint of rye and some lemon rind, otherwise not very aromatic.

Taste: Take a macro lager and subtract the adjuncts and replace them with some rye and thatís what you get with Coney Island Mermaid Pilsner. More clean-tasting than anything else, itís mildly bitter but with noticeable dry malt presence. The rye appears in the middle of the palate creating for a hint of spice and again in the aftertaste, along with the six other malts to give a biscuity/bready-like taste to the palate.

The label brags that it uses four different hops and is dry hopped, but itís still not what I would consider a hoppy or even bitter lager. Thereís enough hops in the beer to notice, but anyone expecting strong citrusy or piney notes should opt for the Sword Swallower instead. Thereís some lemonpeel and a hint of flowers to taste, but otherwise itís mild.

Drinkability: At 5.5% ABV, Coney Island Mermaid Pilsner is actually pretty big for even a pale American pilsner. Though the carbonation is clear, itís not overwhelming - making for a light, crisp mouthfeel. Itís not what I would consider a refreshing beer per se, especially considering the aftertaste is slightly dry with a bit of a chalky sensation. Still, itís a nice to find a craft lager that drinks like a lager without any gimmicks.
