As the capital of Iowa, Des Moines constantly surprises first-time visitors with its mix of expected agrarian heritage and influences and unanticipated cosmopolitan flare. So too, with Des Moines IPA, an American take on a world beer: India Pale Ale (IPA).

Iowa’s steady, well balanced nature is reflected in this IPA with its mix of medium body, lighter color and plenty of malt flavor to balance the massive hop impact. Citrusy and piney hops from the Pacific Northwest offset the robust malt flavor of the two-row barley and medium crystal malts. Des Moines IPA proudly represents the Hawkeye State in the category of American IPA, a favorite of beer connoisseurs all across the country.

A vigorous pour into my Teku glass produces a fat-finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer is a bright amber color that shows a brilliantly clear, copper hue when held up to the light. The aroma is quite hoppy, with a peppery, herbal, pine like bite to it at the front, followed by supporting fruit notes of lychee, tangelo zest, and grapefruit zest. The malt character, while playing a softer supporting is still noticeable with notes of slightly nutty, caramelized, toasted malt, and some English Biscuit like aromatics.

Nicely bitter, with ample hop fruit character, the finish has a bite to its bitterness and an herbal, pine like note lingers on the palate. My second sip sees a bright grapefruit zest flavor lingering on in the middle finish along with the other notes. The body is light enough to be a quaffable IPA, but there is some viscosity to this beer, but only lightly so. There is a touch of malt sweetness here, and soft, subtle malt flavors like caramelized grain, English biscuit notes, and a touch of whole grain bread do come through. The caramelized flavors layers and sticks to the hop notes, both adding a caramelized note to the fruit and pine like flavors.

An enjoyable IPA, nicely hoppy, and enough so that the caramel malts in this beer aren’t able to really get in the way of the hop focus.

Growler at a tasting at Matt’s place. Pours a clear orange tinged amber with a thin white head. Soft clean citrus with some hints of caramel and candied citrus. Medium bodied, smooth bitter citrus with some long malt and toast. Lingering grapefruit and a bit of caramel. Very tasty.

Growler brought by Ramy at Zach & Matt’s tasting. Pours amber gold with a small white head. Aroma of citrus zest and pine with a good amount of hoppiness. Taste starts bitter with notes of pine resin and citrus pith but finishes clean and really nice. Enjoyable.

22 oz hand bottle courtesy of jcwattsrugger. Pours a rich copper color with a one finger white head. Bits and pieces of lace. Strong pine resin aroma. Pine resin bitterness with secondary citrus flavor. Weak, but there, malt backbone. Full bodied and bitter on the tongue. John tells me this brewery doesn’t bottle or can, but if they ever do, ISO more.

Gold color, light head, smells like pine for sure, similar to the black IPA. Hops hit you tight away. Very decent ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Qualifier: don't like IPAs, smells terrible, blasts you with a heavy hoppy flavor but it doesn't linger.

This is one of my favorite beers. Well balanced, nice lace on the glass. It reminds me of several craft beers from Minnesota that aren’t available in Iowa. Strong, hoppy and flavorful with pine and citrus, it electrifies the taste buds without triggering the actual "bitter" on your tongue. LOVE IT. Looking forward to Confluence getting this stuff canned and into the local stores.
