As the capital of Iowa, Des Moines constantly surprises first-time visitors with its mix of expected agrarian heritage and influences and unanticipated cosmopolitan flare. So too, with Des Moines IPA, an American take on a world beer: India Pale Ale (IPA).

Iowa’s steady, well balanced nature is reflected in this IPA with its mix of medium body, lighter color and plenty of malt flavor to balance the massive hop impact. Citrusy and piney hops from the Pacific Northwest offset the robust malt flavor of the two-row barley and medium crystal malts. Des Moines IPA proudly represents the Hawkeye State in the category of American IPA, a favorite of beer connoisseurs all across the country.

This is one of my favorite beers. Well balanced, nice lace on the glass. It reminds me of several craft beers from Minnesota that aren’t available in Iowa. Strong, hoppy and flavorful with pine and citrus, it electrifies the taste buds without triggering the actual "bitter" on your tongue. LOVE IT. Looking forward to Confluence getting this stuff canned and into the local stores.

Thanks to Jean who brought a growler from Iowa to Pennsylvania. Fresh cascade and chinook aroma, very nice aroma, flavor. Nicely balanced, fairly bitter, but per style for American IPA. Not quite West Coast bittering or flavor levels, but a little more drinkable. Getting it super fresh certainly helped. Next time I’m in Iowa, will definitely stop for a pint.

On tap at Legends south. Pours clear golden with a thick lacy white head. Aroma of citrus hops, very sweet. Flavour is hoppy, but not thick. Finish is smoothly bitter and clean. So very refreshing.

Tap. Pours clear amber, small beige head, nice lacing. Aroma is light citra. Flavor is the same, nice citra flavors, light sweet, light bitter. Medium body, oily mouthfeel. Tiny bit of harshness in the far finish. This is a good beer

On da bus @ RBSG 2014 between the Morgan Street and 4 Hands stops: As rating on a moving bus can do not much in the way of notes... "Juicy, resiny, biscuity, piney hops. Lively sharp mouth feel." I really liked this. Of course after the sucky brews at Morgan Street about anything would have been greeted happily.

Pours a slightly cloudy copper color with whitr head. Pine, citrus, and bread on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with a hop bite and a little bread. Nice IPA.

22 oz hand bottle courtesy of jcwattsrugger. Pours a rich copper color with a one finger white head. Bits and pieces of lace. Strong pine resin aroma. Pine resin bitterness with secondary citrus flavor. Weak, but there, malt backbone. Full bodied and bitter on the tongue. John tells me this brewery doesn’t bottle or can, but if they ever do, ISO more.

REVIEW STYLE: IPA ABV: 6.8% PURCHASED AT: Benz Beverage Depot; Cedar Rapids POUR: Hazy yellow, thick white head AROMA: Tropical fruit aroma is clear, as well as the hop presence. TASTE: Pineapple shines and is rounded out nicely by the hops and malts. Ratebeer.com rating: 81 Beeradvocate raing: N/A Overall: B+ My recommendation: Very impressive offering and happy that this is an Iowa brewed beer. Get out and buy a quart, support the state, and get yourself a fantastic beer!
