When most people think of Iowa, they picture flowing fields of grain for miles and miles. Created by a third-generation farm boy, Farmer Johnís Multi-Grain Ale is amber waves of grain in a glass. A refreshing, blonde ale, it features a base of two row American barley malt along with a large portion of wheat malt, a small dose of rye malt and un-malted oats, corn and wheat.

Lightly hopped with English East Kent Goldings hops chosen for their subtle, earthy qualities and finished with Czech Saaz hops for their sweet, floral essence to create a beer thatís light in body and color, with a velvety texture and an aroma as sweet as a freshly cut field of hay. Farmer Johnís captures the endless bounty of Iowa in a easy-drinking, blonde ale.

Tap at the brewpub. The body was hazy bright straw yellow with a bright white head to match. The nose was doughy with some walnuts. The taste was a little bit of bitter orange peels and some bread crust. A long lingering finish was pleasant.

32oz growler from jcwatts. Poured a hazy orange/gold body with a smaller bright white foamy head. Aroma of orange peel, tea leaves, vanilla potpurri, dough and sour lemons. Body is medium to fuller with lighter carbonation and a milky mouthfeel. Flavor is odd, bad dough, wet bread, fruit that is just starting to spoil, odd but not bad odd and not good odd just odd.

Shaker pint draft at the brewery tasting room in Des Moines, Iowa. The pour is a hazed yellow orange golden with little to no head. The aroma is faint, was served pretty cold. As the beer warms some, there is the corn, rye malt and a general earth hop character. The taste is the corn, rye and hop earth of the nose plus a solid dose of wheat. The palate is light bodied with active carbonation and a clean enough finish.
