COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This dark beer pays homage to Des Moinesí history as a late 19th century coal town. Confluence Brewery is located on Thomas Beck Road, which is named after an English immigrant who developed extensive (but now long abandoned) coal mine holdings in Des Moines, including some near our brewery. The dark color comes from black wheat, which is combined with two-row base malt and a good portion of caramel malt and some flaked rye to add a subtle dry, spiciness. Donít let the color fool you, this dark beer is not roasty or stout-like. We used a special blend of hops, including Nelson Sauvin from Australia, to give it a unique flavor and aroma profile completely distinct from its India Pale Ale cousin, Des Moines IPA.

Tasted at RBSG grand tasting post-tasting. 64oz growler. Dark brown color. Thin off-white khaki head. Leaves awesome bigger lace. Medium - plus bodiy. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Moderate roast, dark chocolate, light spice. Moderate sweet, moderate bitter. Solid, smooth, creamy black IPA.

Growler. Reddish brown pour with a smaller head. Citrus hop in this - hops arenít too bold. Tasty though.

Growler at Paulís for the Blind Stout tasting. Pours a dark ruby tinged brown to black with a thin beige head. Loads of bright citrus hops on the nose, smells awesome. Roasty but subtle still, lots of soft cocoa and a backbone of pithy grapefruit filled citrus. Long roast into the finish with a good amount of bitterness. Lovely stuff.

Growler at Paulís tasting. Pours near black with a beige head. Super dank piney and floral hops, with lighter roasted malts and a hint of sweetness. Really fresh and really damn good.

Keg on the bus during RBWG 2013. Dark brown pour, almost black, with a nice tan head. Roasted malts, pine, fruitiness on the aroma. Nice flavor, dark malts, roast, grapefruit, pine, medium chocolate. Nice.

UPDATED: JUN 4, 2016 Good balance of roast and citrus hops, though it falls a little more heavily on the roast stout side. Some musky malt and dark chocolate. Black pour with great head and lacing. Bitter finish. Nitro at Churchkey.

Draft at Churchkey. Poured a very dark brown head with a small tan head. Aroma was dark fruit notes, light soapy, flower petal hop notes. Flavor had roasted malts, very mild bitterness. A nice deviation from some of the more pine or citrus, chalky black IPAs that are out there.

Tap. Pours clear hazel with a small tan head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma is roasty with notes of citrus and pine. Flavor is the same, touch of dankness, bit of coffee, fairly muted. Light sweet, light bitterness growing stronger on the finish. Medium body. Pretty decent.

32 ounce growler thanks to CanIHave4Beers. Black with creamy head. Nicely hopped. Some chocolate and roast (despite the description saying not roasty). Tasty.
