COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This dark beer pays homage to Des Moinesí history as a late 19th century coal town. Confluence Brewery is located on Thomas Beck Road, which is named after an English immigrant who developed extensive (but now long abandoned) coal mine holdings in Des Moines, including some near our brewery. The dark color comes from black wheat, which is combined with two-row base malt and a good portion of caramel malt and some flaked rye to add a subtle dry, spiciness. Donít let the color fool you, this dark beer is not roasty or stout-like. We used a special blend of hops, including Nelson Sauvin from Australia, to give it a unique flavor and aroma profile completely distinct from its India Pale Ale cousin, Des Moines IPA.

Keg on the bus during RBWG 2013. Dark brown pour, almost black, with a nice tan head. Roasted malts, pine, fruitiness on the aroma. Nice flavor, dark malts, roast, grapefruit, pine, medium chocolate. Nice.

Growler from the brewpub. Thanks for the glass, jcwattsrugger! Perfectly black colored brew with a thin lightly orange tinted thin head. The nose is up front with a combination of dark chocolate, plums, roast and obvious grapefruit. The taste is like sweetened up iced coffee with some grapefruit hints running through the back end. There is also a little bit of prune quality. A nice sipper. This isnít as hoppy as I expected and a little sweet overall. Subtle hopping, this one is surprisingly smooth and light in the mouth.

RBSG 2013. Hop aroma with malt and roasted grain. I am not always crazy about the black IPAs, but this one is good. Bitter hops finish.

Growler shared by jcwatts, thanks John. Poured a good looking dark brown body with an average foamy light beige head. Aroma of burnt malts, chocolate, citrus, roasted pineapple, dark toast and cola. Smooth body with light carbonation and a creamy smooth finsh. Flavor of char, citrus rind, dark toast, bakers dark chocolate and grapefruit. Good stuff, but then again I love this style so Iím easy to please with the Black IPAs, or does that actually make me more picky???

32 ounce growler thanks to CanIHave4Beers. Black with creamy head. Nicely hopped. Some chocolate and roast (despite the description saying not roasty). Tasty.

Location: Growler at Paulís Blind Impy Stout Tasting, 1/5/13

Aroma: This one has a fresh, hoppy nose, pine, resin, citrus, and some roasted malts too
Appearance: It pours a brown color with a small beige head and some sticky lace on the glass
Flavor: Nice taste, it isnít quite as nice as the nose, but similar component-wise, with roast and hops
Palate: The body of this beer is medium-plus, with a smooth feel, and a lot of drinkability
Overall Impression: Awesome share, thanks to jcwattsrugger for this one! I had no idea what to expect, but I really enjoyed this one. This is right on what Iím looking for in a Black IPA, and if Iím ever Des Moines Iíll have to make an effort to swing by Confluence.

A vigorous pour into my Teku glass produces a two finger thick, pale brown tinged, tan colored head. The beer is a concentrated brown color that shows a lightly hazy, purple tinged, concentrated amber hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of a mix of toasted dark malt and herbal / pine like hops. Ample whole grain notes, toasted brown bread, roasted citrus hop notes, light pine aromatics.

This has a prickly carbonation and a full citrus hoppiness to it up front, while the finish focuses on toasted brown bread, and nutty dark malt. The fruit notes up front definitely have a roasted edge to them from the dark malt; tangerine, grapefruit, Curacao orange, some lychee notes, and kumquat, all with a roasted overlay to it. The bitterness has a nice bite to it, though it isnít overly aggressive, in fact the beer is fairly smooth, which helps let the dark malt come through a bit better. The malt competes pretty well with the hop character; ample roasted nutty notes, toasted whole grain.

This is nice, I like the balance between hop and malt here, it is perhaps a touch more balanced than many an other Black IPA I have had, though it is clearly still a hop dominated beer.

64 ounce growler thanks to John shared with a ton of people at Hunhapu, poured a dark brown almost black color with aromas of roast amd light hops. Flavors were roast, some chocolate and light hops. Black IPAs are not my style but decent overall. Thanks for the growler John.
