COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This dark beer pays homage to Des Moines’ history as a late 19th century coal town. Confluence Brewery is located on Thomas Beck Road, which is named after an English immigrant who developed extensive (but now long abandoned) coal mine holdings in Des Moines, including some near our brewery. The dark color comes from black wheat, which is combined with two-row base malt and a good portion of caramel malt and some flaked rye to add a subtle dry, spiciness. Don’t let the color fool you, this dark beer is not roasty or stout-like. We used a special blend of hops, including Nelson Sauvin from Australia, to give it a unique flavor and aroma profile completely distinct from its India Pale Ale cousin, Des Moines IPA.

64 ounce growler thanks to John shared with a ton of people at Hunhapu, poured a dark brown almost black color with aromas of roast amd light hops. Flavors were roast, some chocolate and light hops. Black IPAs are not my style but decent overall. Thanks for the growler John.

Tap. Pours clear hazel with a small tan head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma is roasty with notes of citrus and pine. Flavor is the same, touch of dankness, bit of coffee, fairly muted. Light sweet, light bitterness growing stronger on the finish. Medium body. Pretty decent.

A vigorous pour into my Teku glass produces a two finger thick, pale brown tinged, tan colored head. The beer is a concentrated brown color that shows a lightly hazy, purple tinged, concentrated amber hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of a mix of toasted dark malt and herbal / pine like hops. Ample whole grain notes, toasted brown bread, roasted citrus hop notes, light pine aromatics.

This has a prickly carbonation and a full citrus hoppiness to it up front, while the finish focuses on toasted brown bread, and nutty dark malt. The fruit notes up front definitely have a roasted edge to them from the dark malt; tangerine, grapefruit, Curacao orange, some lychee notes, and kumquat, all with a roasted overlay to it. The bitterness has a nice bite to it, though it isn’t overly aggressive, in fact the beer is fairly smooth, which helps let the dark malt come through a bit better. The malt competes pretty well with the hop character; ample roasted nutty notes, toasted whole grain.

This is nice, I like the balance between hop and malt here, it is perhaps a touch more balanced than many an other Black IPA I have had, though it is clearly still a hop dominated beer.

Dark brown beer with a short lived tan head. Puffed wheat and caramel corn nose. Buttered toast, puffed wheat, dark caramel, and some citrus hops combine to make this an interesting beer. Hints of sweetened coffee in the finish.

Had this on draft at Confluence Brewery in Des Moines. Almost black pour. Fluffy white head. Light hoppy stout taste. Pretty average beer but would for sure get this if I came back

On tap at the brewery. Pours a black body with a finger-width, creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is juicier citruses with pine resins and florals up front with a soft cocoa and pleasant roast backing. Flavor is similar. Juicy citruses with a nice cocoa note and some florals up front before a good amount of pine resins and a balanced roast come in. Finishes dry and moderately bitter with lots of citruses and a nice cocoa. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium, smooth body and a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, a really well done Black IPA. Citrusy with plenty of florals and pine resins balanced very well with a soft cocoa and roast backing. Highly enjoyable.

Growler sampled at RBSG. From notes. Loads of citrus hops. Super fruity with a decent roasty malt backbone. Diggin it.

Pours a trsnslucent brownish-black from the bottle with fluffy off-white head that dissipates to leave light lacing. Aroma is pretty much all hops, but a slight toasted chocolate malts backbone. Taste follows, with a bittersweet finish. Damn good stuff.

Shared thanks to JCWatts. Pours out an attractive brown color with a thin white head. Aroma is of nice citrusy and fruity hops, light chocolate and some toasted grainy malts. Taste is complex, nice hop profile of citrus and light fruit grass, mild chocolate, some caramel and toasted malts all while having a decent hop punch. Solid
