COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This dark beer pays homage to Des Moines’ history as a late 19th century coal town. Confluence Brewery is located on Thomas Beck Road, which is named after an English immigrant who developed extensive (but now long abandoned) coal mine holdings in Des Moines, including some near our brewery. The dark color comes from black wheat, which is combined with two-row base malt and a good portion of caramel malt and some flaked rye to add a subtle dry, spiciness. Don’t let the color fool you, this dark beer is not roasty or stout-like. We used a special blend of hops, including Nelson Sauvin from Australia, to give it a unique flavor and aroma profile completely distinct from its India Pale Ale cousin, Des Moines IPA.

UPDATED: FEB 17, 2013 Confluence is KILLING IT. Seriously. This citrus forward hop bomb pours near black with a small light tan head. Aroma is lemon zest, tropical fruit, good weed, and a bit of chocolate and toffee. Flavor follows, the malt body really compliments hop aromas. Clean, bitter finish with great carbonation for the style. Reminds me of a light version of 2007 Darkness.

Growler @ Presidential Suite. Thanks, John. Dark brown, nearly black, pour with a khaki head. Orange peel and roasted malts on the nose. Lots of herbal, earthy hops as well. Some coffee grounds and piney hops. there’s a nice bitterness to the taste. Tons of orange, pine, and woody herbs. Somewhat earthy and there’s a strong coffee character. Lots of roast. Slight citrus character and malt sweetness.

Mini growler poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lasting tan head. Aromas of roasted malt, grapefruit zest, earthiness and pine. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of roasted malt, earthiness, pine and light grapefruit zest with a crisp dry moderatly bitter lingering roasty finish.

Tasted at RBSG grand tasting post-tasting. 64oz growler. Dark brown color. Thin off-white khaki head. Leaves awesome bigger lace. Medium - plus bodiy. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Moderate roast, dark chocolate, light spice. Moderate sweet, moderate bitter. Solid, smooth, creamy black IPA.

on tap @ Confluence Brewing / Des moines IA --- Cloudy dark brown, good head cover, streamers of lace. Taste is solid roasted malt with caramel that drops hops into the palate; on subsequent swallows, the hops fade in and out like a distant AM radio station. A very interesting Black IPA....subtle, yet plenty of strength. Recommended.

Dark brown beer with a short lived tan head. Puffed wheat and caramel corn nose. Buttered toast, puffed wheat, dark caramel, and some citrus hops combine to make this an interesting beer. Hints of sweetened coffee in the finish.

Dark brown with a thin tan head. Nice lacing. Hop forward in the aroma and taste but finishes with delicious caramel and coffee flavors. Great aftertaste that keeps on giving.

Tap. Pours clear hazel with a small tan head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma is roasty with notes of citrus and pine. Flavor is the same, touch of dankness, bit of coffee, fairly muted. Light sweet, light bitterness growing stronger on the finish. Medium body. Pretty decent.
