Formally contract brewed by Brakspear. Currently contract brewed at Hepworth for Beer Counter, under the supervision of Peter Scholey, former Brakspear head brewer.
The ingredients and abv are different to the CAMRA Supreme Champion cask ale which continues to be brewed by Coniston.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and crystal malt; Challenger hops - mainly at the end of the boil.

BLUEBIRD is a fine session ale with a light golden colour. The intense resinous and spicy hop character which is the beer’s hallmark is derived from the use of unusual quantities of English Challenger hops, each bale being individually and personally selected by the brewer. The malt is, of course, Maris Otter fermented slightly warm to give a soft fruitiness with a faint hint of scented geranium.

When I bought this I didn’t know what I was getting into. But now I know. I was pleasantly surprised! It was quite enjoyable. No pain whatsoever. None! A nice refreshing bitter and I believe I purchased this at Roger Wilco because it held the title in 1999 at some beer award ceremony. Enjoyed!

Dark orange, with a light amber hue. Off-white head, lacey retention. Floral, piney, Pilsner type flowery nose. Richer pale malt, no caramel, roast, chocolate. Prune-type, fig cookie, pleasant nose. Hint of toffee on the palate with a pilsner type, resiny (no way AM IPA type) finish. Dry, herbal. Medium carbonation, enough to feel sudsy on the edges but no bite. Big, juicy herbal/earthy aftertaste. Drier body, thin, almost taste cardboard (put not off-putting). Mild drinking, light hop (surprised I’m picking it up).

A British bitter with an off copper color. Creamy head fades quick. Settles into a satisfying brew without any surprises good or bad.

330 ml bottle into pint glass, bottled on 10/25/2014. Pours slightly hazy golden amber color with a 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of lemon, orange, plum, pear, apple, honey, light caramel, toasted biscuit, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of bready malt, earthy hops, and fruity yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of lemon, orange, plum, pear, apple, honey, light caramel, toasted biscuit, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, orange, plum, pear, apple, honey, light caramel, toasted biscuit, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice robustness, complexity, and balance of bready malt, earthy hop, and fruity yeast flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.2%. Overall this is an excellent English bitter. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of bready malt, earthy hop, and fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle at 100 piv. Clear golden colour. Poor head retention. Aroma nice floral hoppy English. Taste is mostly bitter, moderate bitterness, light malty caramel background. Mostly English hoppy flavours, long dry English hoppy finish.

Amber orange with a quickly dissipating head. Smells like geranium, toast, dirt, and beery yeast. Very dry, dominated by bitterness. Medium-thin body. Tastes like toast and dirt, and sour, caramely maltiness. The bitterness sticks around in the finish. Good, very easy to drink. A bit dry for me.
