This classic strong golden beer has a long maturation period to give a smooth and warming character, a delightful sipping beer. Rich in fruit flavours with Marzipan, herbal hoppiness and Cognac overtones finishing with a warming alcohol essence. The residual sweetness is balanced by large amounts of best English Goldings Hops.

Bottle @ Black Bull, Coniston. Coppery-amber, flat with scant lace. Sweet, yeasty aroma has lots of sultana. Also berry shortcake. The body is thick and rich. The flavors are all coconut macaroon, toasted coconut. Also dates wrapped in candied orange or lemon peel. Interesting.

Black Bull Inn, from the tap. Not had a chance to try Coniston’s own Barley wine before, and on tap too. Just a half, mind, Landlord. Amber coloured, head lasts a brief time. Spicey aroma (kept quite cool in the cellar, so not as big as expected), sweet at first as expected. Spicey fruit, sort of apple and cinnamon but not quite. Not as obviously alcoholic as it is. It’s some pokey old tackle, and proper dangerously drinkable too.

Bottle from Coppers in Newcastle. Bright amber coloured with a sweet toffee and honey? flavour with vanilla notes in the smooth warming finish.

On cask at the 2012 NWAF, Manchester. Pours a dark golden colour with a thin beige head. Aroma is quite sweet with candy sugar, barley and alcohol. Similar sweet caramel and treacle flavours with alcohol quite prominent. A little dry with a long warming alcohol hum.

Cask at the NWAF, Manchester. Dark brown amber with a head smaller than that guy on Beetlejuice. Not much going on that grabbed my attention, which is odd seeing as this is packing some knackers.. Too sweet for me, some fruit and a hint of boozy cake.

bottle, Coppers, Ncl. Loads of plum jam and fruit cake flavours. Sherry notes and whisky undertones. Amazed at the pale amber appearance, poured very flat and the flavour intensifies with progress. Maybe one I should have left to mature, but the temptation was too much. Robust and so well made

275ml bottle. Clear medium gold, thin white head. Complex, malty aroma, marzipan, walnuts, dried fruits, apricots, figs, quite spicy. Semi-sweet, full bodied, high bitterness, balanced CO2. Malty, comlex taste, almonds, marzipan, walnuts, dried figs, apricots, spices, yeast. Finishes rather dry, will probably age beautifully. (2011-10-09)
