COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned - contract brewed by Hepworth for Coniston.
Stronger version of Bluebird.
For cask version, see Coniston (Premium) XB.

English Pale Ale with American aroma hops.
Bluebird XB combines two of the great themes of ale brewing to produce something distinctive and new. The fine tradition of English Pale Ale is about quaffing, refreshment and complexity of flavour without alcoholic strength

Then throw in a new wave of American hop variety Mount Hood with robust citrus aromas.
... Not too much mind or we might have an American Pale Ale on our hands?

Bluebird XB
familiar ... but different

Cask @ Maproom. Orange color with a frothy white head. Aromas of sweetness, malt, somewhat perfumy. Taste is biscuty (an american biscut) malt with light caramel and wood? Decent session, but lacking.

Bottled: Golden hue with a small but lasting frothy head and very good lace. The aroma has notes of hayfield and wildflower, herbal hops, pale bready malting, and a hint of spiced apple pie. The taste displays a mild malt and swet fruit combination up front with a nice balanced load of bitters upon the finish. The feel is a bit ordinary, smooth and lingering chalkiness. Not bad but I miss the old stuff. (Brakspear) If you find a cask of the Regular Bluebird, that is recommended and is the real bitter.

Light fruit-like sweetness on the tongue but did not find it resembling a washed out light. Has malty characteristics without coating the mouth. I thought this selection good for an early afternoon quaff.

On tap at Buckeye. Not much as far as aroma goes - and beleive me, Rockinout and I were just about snorting this stuff trying to get a smell. Taste was nice and interesting though - fruity sweetness - similar to JuicyFruit Gum along with a hop presence that left my tongue totally dry and awaiting another sip. Body seemed a little fizzy - but of course that was after drinking some smooth cask ale.

Bottle best before 21-09-05 drank on 30-03-05 Golden in color with a medium white head. Aroma is mildy fruity with a hint of orange and earthy hops. Starts sweet and ends dry with a floral and orange hop charcater. Mouthfeel is extremely prickly with C02 which makes it much less enjoyable than the typical versions I’ve had of this breweries bitters.

Bottle best before 21-09-05 drank on 30-03-05: Slightly cloudy orange with a thin white head, light flower and orange aroma, starts and ends lightly bitter with a strange off-taste, prickly carbonation with a thin body. This beer is somewhere between boring and not that great.

Bright gold coloring with very large off white head. The aroma is light bread with some slight pine and grapefruit. The taste is slight citrus with some artificial sweetner. There is also a hint of tobacco in the background. A decent golden, but could use a little more flavor.

Bottle. Smells quite nice, some flowery aromatic, slightly pine-sappy nose. Flavour feels a bit diluted or something. Lightly sweet to start, hoppy, with some tea-like qualties and some citrus. Failry malty aswell.

Joeh (2036) - Buckinghamshire, ENGLAND - MAR 20, 2005
Brewed stronger than the regular Bluebird and with an American hop variety - more like an APA. 500ml bottle conditioned from Hogs Back. Sparkling pale gold with a fluffy head. Not hugely aromatic but lightly herbal hops and a bit of citrus fruit. The flavour is citric hoppiness (grapefruit), slightly herby and quite floral. Fairly hoppy and bitter but not over the top with not a huge amount of flavour coming from the hops, but thankfully the background malt is pronounced enough to keep this interesting. A nice light almost-APA.

Golden, big head. Decent aroma, resinous with other florals as well. Soft, with a citric hop note, jammy. Malts seem on the edge of oxidation, and this just only showed up here recently. Citric finish, a bit gassy as well. I find myself missing the Brakspear stamp on the Coniston beers.
