4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Rastacouere (5921) - Montréal, - MAR 30, 2011
Beautiful fruit esters emanate from the poorly designed label bottle as soon as the cap is off. The pour unveils a beautiful, veiled golden ale crowned by an eternal, dense white foam, stable and sticky. Peppery, herbal nose where a fair bit of juicy, sappy hops interact with the very fruity yeast. It almost results in a fruit salad, litchi, pears, citrus, pineapple all walk through. A whisper of alcohol supervise it all once you put it on your tongue while the carbonation remains diplomatic for a Belgian ale, enhancing drinkability. Very structured and well developed malts showcase a fresh breadiness and pleasant raw grains echoed by the spicy yeast and reverberate the estery fruitiness. Relatively round, kinda airy texture. As it warms, it becomes more phenolic, earthier, more focused on the alcohol and globally less interesting, but if you don’t take the time to overanalyse it, you’ll be through your bottle way too quickly for this to happen. Wow, what a lovely ale where I expected "just another Belgian ale". Characterful, loaded with quality ingredients that all respectively come across in a cohesive ensemble. Not too complicated. Still feeling fresh despite being at least several months old. Lovely, belgian ales such as this one brought me into the world of craft beer years ago and it’s quite rare to fall upon a new one that brings back those mid-pioneer, mid-discoverer feelings that are so strong when you bathe in a new passion.

draft at Den Tatoverede Enke in Copenhagen. the first glass was in poor shape, but easily replaced by the staff (acidic and buttery diacetyl, perfume, spice, wood, nuts) after switching the keg, the second glass has a peppery, spicy, dry hppped pungent noble hop cone nose with floral peach fuzz and dandelion esters. creamy and soft texture with prickly and spicy metallic phenol and dried hop cones, and a small amount of crushed egg shell yeast powder character. finish of bubble gum and sugared dried pineapple, and the metal note fades as it opens.

Thanks to Jeff for the share. Muddy gold pour with a giant white head and drippy lace. Probably way too carbonated. Aroma yield notes of bubble gum, spice, citric hops and caramel. Light belgian yeast character and subdued tropical fruit.

Bottle courtesy of the exceedingly good looking Dany in exchange for having some beer shipped to me and carting it up to see him at TAPNY. Pours a rather hazy browned golden amber with a large white head. Sweet and musky on the nose, some light floral hints with some fruit. Medium bodied, light sweetness, musky malt, toast and a fruity and floral sweetness. Light bitterness and some warmth on the finish. A touch of oxidization as well.
