COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask, special
Brewed initially for Wetherspoon 2013 Spring 2013 Real Ale Festival
This black IPA combines the best qualities of the dark malt and fruity hop flavours of American IPAs, giving a full hop aroma and flavour, balanced by malt flavours which give a velvety-smooth character.

Cask (handpump) at the Sir John Oldcastle (JD Wetherspoon) on 13 April 2013. I know it’s a bit low in alcohol for a Black IPA (in US terms) but surely not a Schwartzbier. Smooth and dark. Not a huge hop presence but nicely balanced and drinkable. Tangy hops and roasty malts combined rather well with a touch of stewed coffee. Good crossover. Plenty of character given the abv. I enjoyed this one.

Cask Pint at Wibbas Down (JDW), Wimbledon, London in Apr 2013 during Spoons Festival - Black in colour with Reddish tinge. Malty; roasty malts, some coffee. Hoppy; some piney hop bitterness. Fruity; grapefruit citrus. Mildly bitter roast malty hoppy throughout. OK. Drinkable.

Cask at the Moon Under Water (JDW), Watford on 30 April 2013. Poured a dark ruby with a dense beige head. Nutty aroma with notes of cinnamon and toasted malt. Initial flavours were earthy with some molasses and tropical fruit. Finish was liquorice, sweet coffee and resin.

Hamilton Hall Spoons. Clear dark brown beer, tiny pale tan head. Palate is light and dry with mild fine carbonation. Very lighttouhc of dark malts but there is detectable roast and coffee. Mild pine hops and a touch of sweeter fruits. Finishes dry. It’s a well flavoured mild black ipa but a bit too dry.

Cask at The Greyhound, Bridport; dark brown, looks nice; loose bubbly white head; not much on the nose, but plenty of hop flavour - tropical fruit (pineapple, grapefruit) with a slight roasted malt edge; some pine; light but long bitter finish; really, really good beer in a very decent (for a change) Wetherspoons (even the little half-term kids in the family room were well behaved).
