COOPís 2012 Barleywine Ale was a pursuit of this particular beer style in the English tradition. This malt forward brew was crafted with copious amounts of Maris Otter, and accented with toasted malts. After fermentation, it was aged in oak barrels where souring bacteria and yeast were introduced. The result is a blend of rich malt character and noticeable tartness.

On tap. Hazy deep copper with a few bubbles. Aroma is cherry liqueur, oak and toffee. Taste is caramel, lightly tart cherry, oak and a nice dash of vanilla whiskeyness. Medium body has low carbonation and is sweetish, as per the English Barleywine style, but balanced well by the oak and hint of tartness.

750ml served into a snifter 2012 bottle 1175/1524 A - A semi hard pour reveals a dark mahogany body with 2 fingers of creamy white. Head sinks into a wispy top. A few specks of lacing drooping from the snifter. S - Rich butterscotch, dried candied peaches, toasted/burnt sugar, creamy vanilla, woody alcohol vapors, toasted nuts, caramel apples, stewed cherries. T - Rich caramel/butterscotch surround by a tart edge of plums, grapes, and green apple skins, and stewed cherries. The acidity cuts through the burnt caramel malt. Creamy vanilla runs along side faint wood notes with a nutty bitterness. M - Medium full creamy body, solid carbonation that lasts Lots going on here. Intoxicating aroma, the tartness really blends well and adds a synergistic character. Barrel flavors are present but not overpowering. Iíve had this a few times before and didnít like it as much as I do tonight. Maybe a few months did the bottle good. I want to pick up another bottle of this to age. Serving type: bottle 01-08-2013

Bottle shared by a random guy at Toppling Goliath. Pours a hazy weird brown, lots of caramel, malts and toffee on the aroma. Tons of booze on the tongue, some dark fruits. Pretty average beer.

At Avery Strong Ale Fest 2013--murky dark copper with a small foamy beige head. Nose was a little quiet but was full of woody earthy nutty toffee. Flavor is nearly cloying sweet with grainy malty toffee, earthy wood tones, and a small touch of bourbon and fruit. Just muddled.

Tap @ Boulder Strong Ale Fest 2013. Pours a bit hazy, reddish brown appearance with a thin brown head. Fairly toasty malty, caramel, light toffee, a bit fruity aroma. Flavor was a bit boozy with notes of cherry, dark fruits, plum, caramel, and wood. I wasnít a huge fan of this one.

On tap at Avery Strong Ale Fest poured a hazy reddish amber with a small lingering amber head. Aromas of carmel, toffee, oak, fruittiness and light tobacco. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, oak, fruittiness and light earthiness with a smooth lingering fruity finish.

At Boulder Strong Ale. Jack Daniels barrels. Dark gold amber. Pretty standard (read: good) bourbon barrel nose, but taste was a big departure: tart and hoppy with a very nice sour streak. I honestly didnít understand what was going on when I tried this because the sourness just didnít compute with the barleywine expectations and the nose. Very unique and worth seeking out.

750ml bottle .. nice label .. . deep malt, plum, and sherry .. . light mouth .. . a bit oxidized even though young .. . pretty good but the imperial stout was much better .. . . i immediately regret this decision.

UPDATED: FEB 4, 2013 Grabbed a bottle of this while in Tulsa on business. Bottle # 533/1534. The pour is a murky brown color with a thin fluffy tan head developing on top. Some spotty lacing slides along the glass after each sip. The oak is strong in the scent with noticeable caramel and fruity notes of plum and funky cherry. Thereís definitely some fruity tartness to the flavor as well with some funky yeast notes. The malts are sweet but also a bit toasty here too. Itís a bit prickly on the palate with some grapey vinous notes helping that along. Surprisingly, the oak is much more subtle in the flavor than it is in the aroma. In short, a slightly funky and tart beer with a Barleywine base. Somewhat odd at times but a good, fun beer.
