4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 FURLYSURIOUS (185) - Orono, Minnesota, USA - MAY 12, 2012
Big thanks to my good friend 4balance for this unexpected brew! Pours from 750ml to tulip glass:
Pours without the slightest hint of clarity. Big, swelling medium brown head that slowly subsides to a collar with a fat creamy dollop sailing around the center of the glass. Perfect lacing.
Plenty of milk chocolate and oak... warming wood bits, graham cracker, soft booze, lots of character. Evolving and blossoming as it warms.
Here we go: the taste... Dangerously smooth. No intrusive harshness from the barrel or booze. Soft chocolate, tobacco, roasty malt presence, some sweet fruits linger on the tail end.
Perhaps the most drinkable BA imperial stout I’ve ever had, which is certainly this beers forte... I do sort of wish it could get beefed up a bit in feel and flavor. What’s here is damn good though. Thanks again Ken!

Pour on tap at Avery Strong Ale was dark brownish black with thin off white head, aroma brought notes of oak, acidic/tannic notes, hints of slight chocolate, slight bourbon as well but not much, some roast and espresso in there as well. Taste had a strong acidic/tannic oak presence, but after was a nice chocolate, bourbon and espresso mix, some slight caramel notes, finished fairly sweet but dry.

Tap @ Avery, doing the 10th Annual Boulder Strong Ale Festival. Pours black with a offwhite head. Aroma of roasted malt, lighty tart / sour, oaky, winenotes. Taste is malts, light chocolate, light sourness, oaky. Medium body, soft carbonation. Slightly infected imo. 090312

Boulder Strong Ale Fest. Black appearance with a dark brown head. Carmel, dark chocolate, oaky, light veggie aroma. Dark chocolate, caramel, oaky, toffee, light celery flavor. Not sure if the veggie notes that I picked up were just from the wood or if they were an infection. Either way, it made the beer a disappointment to me.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Ughsmash (5826) - Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA - MAR 6, 2012
750mL bottle. Poured deep brown with a very tall cap of almost-as-deep head. The aroma picked up warm, roasted sweeter chocolate and coffee malts with overtones of sour oak and bourbon.. vanilla came through on the second wave.. nice components, but it almost smelled thin (if that makes sense). The flavor found sweeter, tangy bourbon and dry-roasted coffee at the core.. the bourbon stuck all the way through.. oak dried out the edges and finish.. mostly tangy barrel and residual roast on the finish. Medium-bodied and a little thin on the palate.. roasty malts were sufficient on the front of the mouth, but it was mostly barrel after that.. overall a solid brew, but it needed more substance.

Bottle. Poured a black color with an average frothy brown head that lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted chocolate, bourbon and acidic aroma. Heavy bitter roasted coffee malt flavor with a heavy bitter and small acidic bite finish of long duration. Full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a complex unbalanced beer.

Sample from bottle 567/612. Pours a dark brown color with a medium tan head. The aroma has roasted malts, some chocolate, thin coffee and mild bourbon notes. The flavor was roasted malt, thin coffee mild bourbon and hints of vanilla. This was a bit too soft and thin for my tastes.
