3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 MBison (548) - Southern Highlands, AUSTRALIA - FEB 10, 2008
Bottle (375ml). Poured an extremely dark brown with a dense, light brown head which lasted well. Aroma was somewhat smoky with roasted chocolate malts, light coffee and faint licorice. Flavor was of roasted malts, faint coffee, milky chocolate, mixed nuts with a smoky/dry finish. Light to medium bodied with lively carbonation, a watery texture, dry mouthfeel and a short finish.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 doublebock (331) - California, USA - DEC 8, 2007
Brown-Maroon color. Minimal head. Aroma is bready and malty. Flavor is sweet smooth maltiness but palate is unfortuantely flat. Aftertaste is a bit musty but then an unexpected coffee bite.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Arassuil (13) - Brisbane, AUSTRALIA - DEC 6, 2007
- (On tap at Albert Hotel, Tamworth NSW, April 2007) I was pleased to find this on tap, as I would only find it at the occasional bottleshop in NSW. Deep dark caramel colour with a consistant centimeter of light foamy head. A slight chocolaty, carmally flavour turns nutty as it goes down, which it did very well.
- (Bottle, stood upright and refrigerated one week) I’ve found most bottle-conditioned brews taste better if they are left upright about a week in the fridge before drinking. It doesn’t seem to affect this beer much, but I did notice a difference. You can see the yeast in the bottom of the bottle if you hold it up to a light. It pours smooth into a glass and has more of a deep ruby colour than what I had on tap. The flavour was much the same, but tended more toward the nutty. An easy drink that still tasted alright when the last had gone English. I noticed the longer one of these is left in the fridge, the better it tastes! For a dark ale, this one is tops!
1.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 6/20 Wulfstan (509) - California, USA - NOV 30, 2007
UPDATED: MAY 28, 2008 Ultimately, this is decent and drinkable, but not at all exciting or satisfying. It is dark red-brown, almost black, with a thin tan head that dissipates fairly quickly to almost nothing, and it is fairly bubbly. The aroma is very mild yeats, chocolate and pine. The taste is also mild, being chocolate, toasted malt, coffe, not bitter or butn, but not sweet. It is rather dry and watery, fairly thin and very light. It grew on me after a few sips, with the wateriness decreasing, and it’s drinkable, but rather humdrum and bland. Also, the finish tends to be a bit like old coffee grounds and burnt toast in water.
