COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Similar to Hefeweizen, but brewed with darker malt (hence the term "dunkel"), making it a dark wheat ale. Low bitterness with sustained yeast and the traditional fruity bite on the palate.

Sample pour at the brewpub. Pours a thin off white head, over a hazy brown (SRM 20) body.....nose is banana/bubblegum, slight toffee/caramel.....taste is banana/bubblegum, light sweetness, very light clove, finishing with a hint of hops....mouth feel medium, carbonation low. This meets the style of a Dunkelweizen very well and is a nicely done beer. BJCP 7/3/14/4/7

Pour on tap at the brewery is dark brownish red with nice off white head, aroma brought spicy pepper and phenolic notes, banana and some clove with some slight chocolate notes, hints of some dark fruit and mixed in some nice peach and pear notes. Taste is a nice mix of fruity esters with spicy phenols, some clove and banana with peach and orange notes, slight chocolate coming in and more spice notes, slight caramel as well, finishing fairly sweet. Well done.

draft at Denver Bicycle Cafe. thin head with no retention. banana / chai / clove nose has both the distinct toast / bread / light caramel expected of dunkel with the estery banana, orange and peach of a weizen. small amount of pumpkin spice late. low carbonation and low acid make for a sludgy and chewy texture, but flavor-wise itís respectable. first iíve had from this colorado brewery.

On tap at the brewery. Poured a deep ruddy brown color with a moderate off-white head that slowly receded to a layer and left some spotty lacing. Aroma of light caramel, soft sweet roastiness, nuts, and a lightly doughy, fruity yeastiness paired with a soft peppery spiciness. Smooth, moderately sweet entry with some caramel paired with a soft roasted maltiness that leads into a doughy, spicy (clove and pepper) yeastiness with some moderate undertones of fruit (soft banana and a faint citrus sweetness) that linger lightly in the finish. Smooth, full mouthfeel with a nice light bite from the carbonation. Overall, a very solid beer without any outright flaws that was very easy to drink and very enjoyable.

Hazy dark brown with a light tan head with good lace. Has an aroma of mild chocolate and yeasty banana. Flavor is pretty malty but with a firm Hefeweizen-like yeastiness, bringing banana and a touch of clove to the finish. But throughout there is this toasty toffee-mild chocolate maltiness thatís mild but delightful in its own way. Nothing outstanding, but clean and reliable.

UPDATED: MAR 2, 2012 Tap @ CKBC. Pours a hazy dark brown appearance with a brown head. Toasty, caramel/wheat malty, rich toffee, moderate fruity eatery aroma thatís somewhat spicy and quite tasty. Delicious toasty, rich toffee, caramel, a touch charred, soft wheat malty, banana flavor. Not a world class dunkleweizen but it is one of the best American versions that Iíve had.

Cloudy dark ruby pour - sudsy head - nose is roasty and nutty, with moderate toasty grains and mild phenols of pepper and clove and a touch of tangy acidity - creamy body, soft carbonation - flavor is medium dry, with strong notes of dark grain/dark bread - a hint of caramel sweetness through the middle - much like the nose, it finishes with a slightly acidic, mildly fruity tang to it - lint hints of peppery phenols in the finish - lingering roastiness - another tasty German style from this brewer.
