RATINGS: 4   MEAN: 3.53/5.0   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.06/5   IBU: 61   EST. CALORIES: 240   ABV: 8%
Black Ale (8% ABV, 61 IBU, 37 SRM) A much darker ale (aka “Cascadian Ale,” or “Black IPA”). Don’t let the 61 IBU rating fool you, there is 1 oz of hops per gallon in this beer, and most of it is on the flavor and aroma end. The hop flavor really cuts through the sweetness of the the dark roasted malts.

Draft sample at the brewery. Poured a pretty dark color, tan head. Aroma was roasted malts, chocolate notes, light citrus character. Flavor was slightly herbal, earthy hops, citrus hops. Roasted malts and a touch of coffee were in there too. Favorite of the trip. Alcohol hidden, surprisingly refreshing.

Draft sample at VA Beer & Cheer Festival, 12/8/12. Pours a very dark brown color with a medium sized creamy brown head. Good head retention. Aroma of big roasted malts and chocolate. The taste is bitter herbal, resin hops, some citrus, as well as roasted malts and coffee. Medium-full bodied, chewy. Nice beer.

Sampled at VA Cheer & Beer. Kind of like someone was told what a black IPA was and then attempted to make one without trying one. Not terrible, but rather unbalanced. Creamy roasted malt. Too bitter without any actual hop character.

Serving: Draft at the brewery. It pours a murky black with a small tan head. The nose is pretty much all pine with slight earth notes. The flavor is a touch soapy up front. That gives way to decent earth, roasted malt, and a lingering pine bitterness on the back end. Pretty good overall.
