When naming this Baltic porter, a collaboration with Tampa’s famed Cigar City Brewing, we opted for Jurata as a nod to a mythological mermaid known to roam the depths of the Baltic Sea, just as energetic yeast used to brew this deep dark beer navigated our fermentation tanks. Dive in and enjoy Jurata’s true-to-style rich and complex flavors!

Bottle. Solid stuff. Dark, roasty, ashy. Nice chocolate notes. Maybe a bit sweet and a bit thin but overall very enjoyable.

This brew has a black appearance with faint ?Cola? lighting at the edges of the glass. The beer fits the definition of the style, unfortunately there’s nothing ambitious about it. Very forgettable, and something of a letdown considering the two breweries.

2/27/14. Bottle. Nice light nose with dark malt and hop notes. Thinner mouth with medium dark notes. Light spicy chocolate notes. Not as thick a mouthfeel as I would have liked. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

The beer pours a deep brown, like fresh coffee, forming a small head of medium sized, light tan bubbles that sit as barely-more than a scrim above the beer. In body, the beer is nearly opaque, with just hints of deep ruby light coming through when held against a light. The body seems quite clear, however, and without any particles floating through it. On the nose, the beer smells of medium roast, fruity coffee beans blended with mild dark chocolate and loamy earth. Spent coffee bean scents also linger in the nose with the faintest hint of raisins. On the tongue, the beer tastes rather bland for 8%. Mild roast and hop bitters play beside subtle chocolate and bready sweetness, leaving my tongue underwhelmed. Flavors are light and unassertive, moving from earthy coffee beans, to subtle dark fruits, and touching upon faint bursts of citrus hops and grass. As it warms, I get hints of smooth milk chocolate, mellow loam, and even blackberries. The finish is brief with chocolate, and the aftertaste, while flavorful, is just a continuation of all the other flavors. As it warms, the blackberry flavor does develop more and more in the aftertaste as well. In the mouth, the beer feels medium bodied, with a middling carbonation that helps to provide a smooth, creamy mouthfeel that still manages to provide a light snap of crispness. The mouth is left fairly dry, with a faint slick spittle trail running in the corners of the mouth and suggesting an acidity that I did not taste. Overall, this beer is a little bit of a letdown. I have high respect for Cigar City and high hopes for Coronado (their new to MA…), but this beer comes across as average, mundane, and uninspiring on my palate. As it warms, it does release more and more flavor, but it is still rather slight and subtle. The dark fruit flavors do develop more and more as the beer warms, which is nice. This is Baltic porter, but it could use a little more to be truly interesting.

Bottle at home. Pours clear dark brown to black with a medium, creamy light tan head, long retention with good lacing. Aroma is light roast and chocolate malt, nutty and toast malt with earthy and woody hops, and notes of dates. Flavor is malt dominant, sweet with light hops and medium bitterness, light dark fruits and a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

On tap @ Uncle Henry’s Deli. Dark brown in color with a tan head. Aromas of burnt sugar, licorice, and roasted malt. Some coffee, raisin, and fig jam. Fairly sweet chocolate notes, too. Flavor is on the sweet side. Lots of chocolate, sugar, and fruit. Some light bitter roast and coffee character. A touch of cocoa powder, notes of licorice, and ash. Kind of syrupy on the palate.

On tap at Triangle Wine. Pours black with a small tan head. I didn’t get much out of the aroma. Maybe a little piney hops and malt. Hard to get anything else out of it. Taste is equally uninspired; weak pine hops with a bit of smokiness as well. Overall palate is meh. Nothing about this beer inspires me to recommend it or ever want to drink it again.

Bottle. Poured a clear dark brown color with an average frothy tan head that mostly lasted and produced excellent lacing. Moderate roasted dark malt aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted dark sweet flavor with a medium dark sweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is the very good brew.

Bomber poured into a pint glass. Pours a deep black, with a big tan head which slowly fades and leaves good lacing. Nose is dark malt. Taste is predominantly dark malt, with some smokiness. Carbonation is a bit high. A good example of the style. Finish is clean and long-lasting.
