COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
CBC and our fellow islanders at Maui Brewing Co are bridging the distance from Hawaii to the mainland with big flavor, camaraderie, and generosity. This centennial, chinook, and nugget-stoked IPA, made floral with the addition of hibiscus flower, is the first of an annual series of collaborative beers benefiting local charities. This time around, a donation will be made to Beer for Boobs, a Susan G Komen 3-day team formed by San Diego company White Labs, who contributed the yeast for this brew. No matter which side of the Pacific you’re on, there’s no better reason to " Drink Pink!"

This is a collaborative effort between CBC and Maui Brewing. One diminutive, but I’m told "strong" gal from Maui Brewing came out to Coronado to create this interesting concoction. It’s the most beautiful ale I’ve ever seen. Such a vibrant rose color. My only regret is that the white head faded so quickly. Emanating from the glass is a lovely grapefruit nose that nearly rivals it’s appearance. The mouthfeel is nearly perfect. Very wet, slick with just the right amount of carbonation burn. Ok, the flavor is unique. Particularly, when considered in the context of the grapefruit bouquet. It is tart and floral. The flavor is consistent throughout. Some lagerish notes at the very finish.

Draft. Cloudy amber body. Frothy, off-white head, rapidly diminishing. Floral aroma along with citrus and toasted grain. Hibiscus, orange. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes lightly sweet, moderately bitter, lightly tart. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Strong hibiscus taste bumps into lingering bitterness and the two clash more than work together. Still, this is an interesting beer with more complexity than most IPAs.

Bomber via Lubiere, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

App.: Clear deep pinkish-amber with a slightly pinkish off-white head. Aroma: Strong, dark, dank hops (I think it’s the Chinook, plenty of pine, peppery, there is a slight floral aroma, light, dusty brown sugar and caramel/toffee, vaguely fruity too. Palate: Medium body, relaxed effervescence. Flav.: Way more hibiscus comes through in mouth, still plenty of deeply resinous hops, pine, barely enough malt support (toast crust, a touch of caramel); dry with surprisingly low bitterness and an oddly empty sort of feel when you swallow, a touch astringent, almost an umami thing, definitely some hibiscus, reminiscent of an herbal tea, a bit of a let down in the finish.

Interesting idea. Might not be the ideal match...

Bottle at Lay’s juau. Pours a cloudy pinkish, purplish amber. Aroma is fantastic - hibiscus, pineapple, citrus, fresh flowers. Taste is a bit of a let down. Very light body. Taste similar to the aroma just very subtle.

Type: Draft Glass: Half-pint glass From: Coronado Brewing Company in Coronado, Calif. (San Diego) Price: $3.00 Misc.: Collaboration with Maui; Had on Jan. 21, 2013 Poured an amber hazy color with one finger of white head when I got it. Above average lacing with good retention. Smelled citrus hops - hibiscus and berry, floral hops, rye hops and iced tea. Tasted much better than the smell. Got grapefruit, lemon, orange rind, hibiscus and floral hops. Light body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Refreshing finish. Really enjoyed this beer. Smooth, refreshing and tasty.

OK, hibiscus? Is this going to work? The 22oz bomber pours clear copper with a short lived off white head that attained a pinkish sort of hue. The aroma offers up modest fruity berry like notes, I guess this is Hibiscus, if I had a better understanding of it, lavender floral and a bit of citrus hops. The taste has a tea to lavender floral to a bitter citrus to start with and then running toward sort of near tart like berry notes. Nice mix of flavors where there’s a pleasing balance of malts, hops and floral notes.

A reddish pinkish IPA with a thin white head. In aroma, caramel malt with fragrant tropical fruits, hops, flowers, beautiful. In mouth, a beautiful crisp malt with light fruit acidity, floral hops, delicious and acidic. At the REAL gastropub, Zwanze day, Dec. 1 2012.
