When we opened our doors 17 years ago, imposing India Pale Ales didn’t even have a style name, but thanks to the bravaddo and ingenuity of American craft brewers, ourselves included, the "Imperial IPA" has grown into one of the most coveted and delicious styles of beer around and one we feel is perfectly suited to serve as this year’s anniversary beer. A quintet of hops--Citra, Green Bullet, Pacific Gem, Pacific Jade, and Wakatu--lend a spicy tropical spike balanced out by clean breadiness on the finish. It makes for the perfect specialty ale to toast to 17 years of brewing immensely flavorful beers. Prost!

Bomber purchased at Escondido BevMo ($6.99). Pours a hazy golden-orange hue with one finger of off-white foam leaving moderate lacing. AROMA of quite spicy hops, salty citrus (lime, navel), herb garden, and some bready malts. FLAVOR of more big spicy hops, tropical and stone fruits, spruce, and caramel malts. Finishes with a bit of tropical fruity sweetness but little bitterness. The high ABV is quite well concealed. I actually bought this about six months ago and just now got around to drinking it. I love the New Zealand hops and this has four of them...should have opened it sooner as I fear the more tropical fruit elements of the hops may have faded somewhat (my fault). Even with the inadvertent aging, still a tasty DIPA. (67, 849)

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours veyr bright orange with a small white cap which quickly disappears. Nose is very orange forward with large grapefruit, dank and mango. Taste is very citrus and tropical forward stuff, heavy dank, slight resin and sweet toffee biscuit. Nice kick of spice on the finish. ABV hidden well. Drinks well. A good drop

Pours orange/amber with a large white head. Nose shows sweet malt, booze, pine and some sweet passion fruit and orange marmalade too. Similar flavours, lots of sweet clean malt but lots of piny, resinous hops and a little pear and lychee too. Could use a bit more carbonation.

Bottle from mane liquor. Pours a cloudy prance with fluffy white head. Nose shows sweet fruit orange, apricot and peach, as well as a slight honey note. Taste is sweet and bitter. Candied fruits, bitter hops and a solid malt backbone. Finishes with a slightly resinous feel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Rich deep orange and light copper coloured body with a thick, four centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of rich hops coupled with a ton of sugars and citrus notes - strong and potent. Full-bodied; Chewy hop and malt flavours at first with a definite emphasis on sugars and citrus components with the hops very grapefruity and citrus all with a sweet and chewy malt flavour. Aftertaste is rich and strong with alcohol notes, some light citrus and herbs coming out as well as the rich, resinous hops. Overall, a nice imperial IPA with a strong finish and unfortunately still showing a lot of alcohol burn. I sampled this 65 cxL bottle purchased from Total Wine in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on 28-December-2013 for US$7.99 sampled with friends on New Years Eve 2013 in Orlando, Florida.

Jacksonville, Fl - Grassoots Natural Market - 22 oz bomber. Pours a sparkling medium golden with a light but persistent snow white head.Sweet aroma with some tropical fruit accents, a nit of honeydew melon, some light spruce. Flavor is pleasant with some tangy citrusy bitterness, some honeydew melon fruitiness, a touch of caramel sweetness. Nice sticky mouthfeel. Enjoyable.

I was really surprised by this, I was expecting, for no reason something darker and more bitter. What I got was a mouthful of orange and sweet hoppy notes with a reasonable length to a bitter finish that made me smile, a lot. This has a "full" mouthfeel, too. Disappointed by the lack of head, and the poor lacing though, that might just be my preference. This is pretty good thought and I’d easily go another. or two.

Pours a hazy light copper/dark gold nice soapy head. Aroma is faint citrucy notes. Taste is citrucy tropical fruits. Mild hops. Good beer not too bitter or sweet. To be fair I’m getting over the flu so my senses are not 100% hopefully ill get a chance to re review this beer.

My Bottom Line:
Candied citrus fruit are grounded in honeyed malts before sandy hop resins seal this hefty Imperial IPA.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the cloudy pale orange.
-Malt flavours are mostly contributed through flabby sugars, which doesn’t help the hop brightness either.
-Mouthfeel could be drier, for my tastes anyway. This is almost blond Barley Wine-like.
-This is still a pleasant sipper for warm evenings.
-This isn’t too different from their Idiot Double IPA.

Bottle. Light to moderate roasted grain for the malt, moderate to heavy grapefruit and orange juice for the hops, faint soap for the yeast with hints of solvent melon and light dried fruits. Head is small, frothy, white with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is sparkling clear medium amber. Flavor starts moderately sweet and slightly acidic, then finishes moderately sweet and bitter. Palate is medium, oily with a carbonation that’s between soft and lively. The juiciness of the hops in this DIPA is like no other I’ve had before. A little more carbonation would’ve put it a little closer to perfection for me.
