Black color with tan foam and a nice ring of lace. Mild floral hop, dry black malt, earth aromas. medium bodied with average co2. Pine sap, mild caramel, dry black malt flavors, but mostly black malts-big black malt finish--good

On tap at Piper’s Pub. Really nice fresh hop aroma, light roasted barley and chocolate. Nice hoppy aromatic notes. Dark black opaque with thin lacing medium tan head. Medium body with medium-high carbonation. Starts with chocolate, roasted barley, and lots of hop bitterness. West Coast flavor with a dark roasted twist. Mild acidity, musky finish with medium bitterness. Smooth chocolate bitter after and a light tang.

On tap @ Toronado San Diego: Poured a dark jet black liquid with a thick rich lather of foam head. Nose had plenty of hops to be had but then again I smelt a funky musky smell of sweat or dirty laundry in the faint background. The flavor was well balanced and boasted of lightly roasted malts and a bitter bite of oily hops that suggested grapefruit citrus. I love the name of this beer that I actually am considering to buy Call of Duty Black Ops for Xbox now-- I usually only play Halo.

UPDATED: DEC 12, 2011 On tap at Mad Mex in Cranberry, comes across as an Ok version, but not a great IPA under some charcoal color, so just some food coloring and a thin Pale Ale. 12 2011 On tap at the Pleasure bar bloomfield. Not the same beer. dark, lots of pine and citrus well blended into a nice smocky IPA.

tap at brewpub 7/14/11-pours pretty much black with a small soapy off white head and lite lacing. nose is piney hops, black patent char notes and some wood. flavors are very woody, char , pine with a ton of burnt notes going on here that kind of cover up some of the hops. long char annd metallic finish a little bit of green apple flavor as well which brought down a bit. decent Black IPA!

Black in color with a light white head. Malty with a nice piney aroma. Drinkable and refreshing for the color.

Sampled on tap at the brewpub on 7/11/2011. This black IPA pours a eclipse black color from the tap. Medium sized tan head, with decent retention and good lacing. The aroma is chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, dark fruit and sweet. A medium bodied Black IPA. The malts are chocolate, coffee and quite roasty, with some dark fruit and the finish. The hops are grapefruity and piney. Decent carbonation. Lots of roasted flavors and hops bitterness. The hops have a lot of staying power as they tend to linger well past the aftertaste. Big roasty Black IPA. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is bitter.

Velvety smooth body on this black beer. Roasted aroma with chocolate, some coffee, light hops, citrus, pine. Creamy. Flavor is much along the aroma lines with the citrus and pine playing a supporting role to the malts, but a very well done supporting role. Instead of the acrid flavor most Black IPAs have (IMO) it is very mellow with decent portions of roasted malt and crisp hops. I’m not a fan of Black IPAs but would drink this one on a regular basis.

Dark dark brown, small tan head fades quickly, little viscous.. Roast, choc, fresh hop aroma, some citrus... Flavor profile follows the aroma, has the creaminess of a porter, lively dry finish, medium body, some licorice is present as well... A touch metallic in the finish, overall a very nice black ipa/hoppy porter...

A: The pour is black as night with a finger of off-white head and nice sticky lacing on the glass. S: Smells nice and citrusy. Great pine hop aromas with some bitter grapefruit peel. Fairly roasty with a touch of coffee aroma to it. Not really too much chocolate, but there is a little bit of it. T: The flavor isn’t quite as impressive/enjoyable. Rather heavy handed on the roasted malts with some definite malt bitterness. The hop flavors are not all that intense and there is a bit of grass and pine. M: Medium in body with a somewhat low level of carbonation. O: Nowhere near as hoppy (in terms of the flavor) as I would have liked.
