Snojerk321 (952), San Diego, California, USA May 8, 2008 22oz bottle from BevMo Mission Valley. Personally I think this should classify as a Belgian Strong Ale. Hoppy nose with hints of Belgian yeast and spice. A good brew, not my favorite from Coronado.
BrotherGrendel (135), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Aug 23, 2008 Appearance is orange amber hue with a modest layer of soapy white foam that sustains, light lacing. Aroma is a mix of sweetness and hops, hops are piney and floral grassiness, sweet bread malts are quite bold, light fruits, Belgian yeast and candi, citrus and peaches, honey, delicious. Taste is initially thick toast malts, piney hops, floral tones, and alcohol, midway enters hints of honey, peaches, Belgian candy, grass, and light citrus, finishes dry and resinous with a hint of chalk. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, thick and resiny texture, moderate carbonation. The sweet malts overwhelm the restricted hop profile, the Belgian aspect is different and exciting although the IPA-ness is sort of drowned out here. beerguy101 (3475), Newark, California, USA Aug 19, 2008 This Imperial IPA pours a deep copper gold color from a 22oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head, nice lacing with decent retention. The aroma is fruity (peaches and pineapples) and sweet with some citrusy hops. A medium bodied Imperial IPA. The malts are fruity and sweet, lots of peach and tropical fruit flavors. It’s very Belgian like in the fruitiness and yeasts. The hops are grapefruity and citrusy. Not as much hop bite or bitterness, as one would expect from a double IPA. That might be because of the big fruity sweetness than due to a lack of hops. A little sticky tasting. Good carbonation. Hides the 9% alcohol very well. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet. bb (2088), Martinez, California, USA Aug 16, 2008 Bottle. AMber beer with an off-white head. yeasty, citrus aroma. Grapefruit, spice, yeast, malt, and caramel flavor. Medium bodied. Grapefruit, yeast, spice, caramel linger. JCB (1001), Durham, North Carolina, USA Aug 6, 2008 22oz from South Bay - thanks, Joey! Clear orange/amber pour, with less carbonation than I’d have expected. The aroma is really very fruity, almost like a "tropical" confection. But it kinda works with the Belgian yeast, especially backed by just a touch of bitterness from the hops. I’d like it to be slightly more dry on the finish and slightly fuller bodied, but I did enjoy this. drewbeerme (1788), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 22, 2008 22oz bottle. bottled a couple months ago but I’m told this was stored in a fridge. pours hazy golden with creamy white head. the aroma is not as hoppy as i was expecting, peach, melon, and earthy hop notes. some spiciness seemingly coming from the yeast. flavor isn’t that bitter either with more sweet candi sugar and biscuity-cookie malts meeting the earthy-dried fruit notes and peachy and apricot hop notes. slightly spicy and dry finish. smooth body and pretty easy drinking. i’m not sure if this is much different and hoppier if it was a bit fresher or on tap (although rates donbut as it is here it seems to fall more on the belgian tripel side with some rather sweet simple candi sugar notes just kissed by PNW hop profile. a much bigger hop profile would help this out a lot as like the idea of a IIPA fermented with a belgian yeast strain, just wish this was a IIPA.
