Aroma is sweet candy malts, similar to a barley wine. Some dirt, earth, and piney hops are there as well. The flavor is the same. Very sweet malt in the forefront followed by a slight astringency and some piney hops.

29-Dec-09 (22-oz bottle: Sample bottle from my sales rep)
With so many outstanding Double IPAs in the local market, Idiot IPA seems to be rather underappreciated, but it’s excellent example of the style San Diego brewers created: very hoppy and bitter, yet still wonderfully balanced by an assertive, yet dry malt backbone. This is the way Double IPAs should be. The hops are assertive and strongly bitter, throwing resiny pine, orange, grapefruit and earth at you. Malts are sweet, but the profile is not so much caramely as it is rich, intense pale malt with a grainy and cereal quality and a pleasant toastiness. This particular bottle has seen maybe six months of aging, so a pleasant earthiness has started to develop that gives the beer additional complexity. As expected, the hoppy aromas have subsided to some degree, so the nose is earthy and sweet, with caramely, grainy and cereal malts in the foreground and orange citrus notes just behind. Medium-full in body and moderately carbonated, with a creamy mouthfeel and a medium-dry finish. Golden-amber in color with some haziness. The rocky, off-white head has a creamy top and shows excellent retention, the inch-plus head settling very slowly to a quarter-inch. Ringed and patchy lacing adorns the glass. Other local brewery’s IPAs may have the spotlight, but Idiot IPA deserves it’s place on stage. This is a great beer that simply should not be overlooked.

13-Sep-09 (22-oz bottle: Purchased 17-Aug-07 for $4.99 at BevMo in La Jolla, CA)
When fresh, this is a typically brash and assertive San Diego double IPA, but with two years of aging on it, the harsh, resiny bitterness of the piney and citrus hops have mellowed considerably and the malts have picked up a smoked quality to them. Wonderfully creamy off-white head pours to nearly two inches before settling to and holding a thin layer. Fine lacing decorates much of the glass.

OK, but very bitter like hop extract.

I liked this. Lots of grapefruit and pine. Not sure why my original rating was so low. This was not bitter and lots of fresh hops. My old rating must have been with an old beer or they tweaked the recipe.

A tasty and very drinkable DIPA. It hits the style because of the up front hops, and has a good fruitiness that complements the hops. Not so much a palate shredder. Not harsh at all. Pours cloudy golden, with a small amount of soapy white head.Picked up at Half Time around Labour Day, this bottle held up excellent.

22 ounce bottle purchased at BevMo in Natomas. The date is 2/24/11, so hopefully that is the bottling date. If so, this is less than 2 weeks old, which would be awesome. Aroma has some sweet candy sugars initially, before there becomes a nice citrus hoppiness. Some mango is definitely in there, which makes it a bit reminiscent of Sculpin. This is just less mango and more sweetness. Mildly hazy (chill haze?) Orange-golden body with a decent off-yellowish head that provides some good lacing. Starts with a fair amount of sweetness, which becomes hoppy shortly thereafter with some citrus, mango notes. Light pineyness, too. This is definitely full-bodied, but the hops and malts play really nicely together, Not overly hopped, but hoped enough so that the malt stickiness is in the background. Finishes with an herbal, pretty damn bitter hop finish, which attempts to hide the ethanol. The ethanol is detected, though, which hurts its mouthfeel a bit. Pretty good, although a little too hoppy for me, despite the style.

Clear Straw/Golden pour with minimal head. Nose should be tons of resiny hops but smelled weaker than expected. Still get some nice grapefruit and resins in the nose. Light body. Resin and light citrus hops and a candy malt. quick bittersweet finish. I expected the hops to be more in your face but this is very light (even subdued) and easy to drink. They hide the alcohol well. Good Quality.

22oz bottle. This one pours a hazy, dark orange color and topped by a thick head of off white foam that shows great retention. The foam slowly settles to a thin film and leaves small lines of lace around the glass. The aroma shows notes of orange and bitter grapefruit hops to go with a massive malt base of toasted caramel. The flavor follows suit with the orange and grapefruit bitterness up front, but is quickly pushed aside by the huge toasted caramel and toffee malt bill. The alcohol is quite pungent also, and adds a bit of heat on the back end. Nearly full bodied with ample carbonation that leads to a lengthy bitter sweet finish. If the alcohol was a little more hidden and with a drier finish we would have something here. Even with those minor flaws it is still a nice example of the style. Good beer.

UPDATED: FEB 2, 2014 Strong bitterness, but not enough hop going on for what it is advertised for. The bit of hop flavor that comes through is tasty but a bit muddy...the most dominate hop flavor is a really high citrus. Crisp, but the malt is too much. Expect more hop flavor and alcohol for all this malt. Nice color but a bit flat...wish they would have waited a bit on some of those hops so there would have been more hop flavor and aroma. +0.2 on retaste on aroma. Smells great

UPDATED: MAR 4, 2011 Tap @ CBC. Clear gold pour with a short white head leaving heavy lace. Grassy, pine nose with some ganja present. Medium-heavy body with an underlying sweetness, but this one is dominated by resinous and grassy hops. Citrus and pine finish. Very tasty, I enjoyed this one a great deal and was surprised by it. Reminds me of Leafer Madness. Deserves, like all IIPAs and IPAs, to be sampled as young as possible.
