4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 tennisjoel (1111) - Rochester, Minnesota, USA - OCT 8, 2010
Tried this at the Coronado brewpub while on vacation in San Diego. Fresh pine hop cone aroma and flavor. It’s hard to beat a freshly brewed well made IIPA from a brewpub, and this fits that profile to a T. Maybe a slightly biased review since I was craving this style, but this really hit the spot. The only detractor I noticed is that the ABV is slightly detectable, albeit nowhere near offputting levels.

22oz bottle, highly recommended by Karl at Jubilation. Glassy amber liquid with two-finger head. Serious DIPA aroma... sweet citrus, tropical flowers, honey... intoxicating. Lurking under that sugary facade is a monstrous amount of hops bitterness. Wow. Resinous, potent, medicinal hops display a full spectrum of herbal flavors -- too intense for the tongue to absorb all at once. Sharp, mouth-numbing bitterness, yet the brew remains drinkable and gets better with each sip. After my first glass I actually feel stoned. This is a perfect example of why S. Cali continues to dominate the ever-growing IPA and DIPA market.

Pours from bomber a hazy dark orange, plenty of off-white head and serious lace. Aroma was lovely, big, fresh, piney hops that really hits you hard. Some grapefruit citrus is mixed in as well. The flavour was of big hops, some pine, some citrus fruits, perhaps even mango. Definitely a sharp little bitterness in there. Simply a well made and tasty beer. Coronado does it again!

Tangerine, pineapple, rosehip, and grapefruit bouquet. Clear amber, medium yellow lacing head. Full bodied and somewhat resinous. Overripe orange and grapefruit peel. Finishes with crackers and grapefruit peel. Hyper-hopped, but the maltiness is big as well. The multiple varieties of hops really come through more in the aroma than the flavor. Good job.

WTF! surprise pint at Toronado! Recommended by one of the devine regulars this very very hoppy american IPA holds a punch that won’t be forgotten fast. Hefty steely hop power horse! Like!

2/13/11. 12oz bottle. Slightly hazed burnt orange pour with a small khaki head that cuts in half but sticks and laces a little. Huge grapefruit and tropical fruit aroma with a solid bite of bitterness. Sweet grapefruit and tropical flavor with a big bitter kick in the finish. Really quite tasty... reminds me of Hopslam in many ways.

Draft at Teresa’s. Pours a hazy golden with thick, bubbly white head. Aroma of hops, pine, vanilla, honey, soap suds, and hints of sweet malts. Full bodied with a juicy, moderately bitter palate. Slow, tangy finish. Excellent Imperial IPA.

It may be big, it maybe a little brash, but boy is this a seriously good DIPA. Looks fine in the glass, not a massive head but a pretty big bugger, nice and dense and creamy. Aroma is on the button. Loads of hop goodness, with definite orange sweetnes, florals, lemon-citrus, pine, resin, really tropical aromas, maybe a bit of peach, perhaps some bitter lychee. Great complexity. Aroma is balanced by a background sweetness, slightly candied in nature, also some thick matiness in there too, but obviously the hops suppress the malt. I should point out here that this is my second bottle, and without any doubt this second one seem to be alot hoppier than the first! Instant smack of bitter hops, but the ferocity is hidden well with a lush mouthfeel and delivery. First up very grapefruiy hops with a touch of earthiness, then there’s some boiled sweets, more orange but this time more like a bitter blood-orange or pink grapefruit, definite peachy quality to this one. The hops are bitter but quite rounded... Ten the malts show themselves momentarily just to add a little balance and touch of sweetness, but aid massively in creating a lovely bit of body, here you get some lovely caramel and toffee which really tastes devine when you burp (it’s not a sick thing to say, Oz Clark explained that burping is the correct way to taste beer, this is due to taste buds that line the thrat that aren’t often used, so there!) Anyway, the malts give a lovely vanilla wafer like quality to the brew. Finish is most definitely bitter, but also most definitely addictive, the beer beckons for sip after sip. Palate is just right, not as thick and soupy as some of the IIPAs I’ve tried recently e.g. Steamworks Conductor IPA, but I quite like the slightly lighter style here, with the hops involved it needs a mid/full bodied approach so as not to totally overwhelm the palate. Big US IPA’s/DIPA’s take a bashing, especially in the UK, but I’m an unashamed enthusiast for the style, so two fingers up to anybody who has a problem with beers like this. This is sexy, rich well made, exotic, hops to the hilt beer and it rocks!

8oz sniffer at Urge Gastropub. 1 finger pretty off-white yellow tiny bubble head. pretty cold temp. Light orange apricote color. smelling of bitter bitterness and citrus. Bitter taste at start with a decent carmel malty base. Good strong bitter aftertaste of an DIPA. Alc is not very obvious. Overall 9 of 10.
